Thanks to all of you who have been leaving messages about Janet. It means a lot to us (family) to know that you appreciated her sense of humor, her compassion for others, her love for family and friends, and her dedication to the nursing profession. It helped us meeting those of you at the viewing and at the funeral. Her unmistakable laugh will still be heard!

Our regrets at the passing of another Sutton southside kid. Remembrances of a very young Janet are among my childhood memories. Our families were quite close during our school years continuing over the years with Donald. We know the difficulty of a loss of a sibling this year having lost Steve only months ago. Bless you all.

Sam & Denise Many friends and family like myself are afraid to write at times like this and stay silent, only thinking of what we would like to say but afraid the words won’t come out the way we mean or want. We all wish we could find the words to that would relieve a small portion of your pain. Now more than ever you will be aware of how much Janet was loved by so many. Her eagerness to help anyone in need, to console when you were hurting, to give you her most cherished gift.. HER SMILE. Although we can’t touch her we will feel her presents forever. Please know you and your family are loved very much and you have to continue your life passing on what Janet has instilled in you… Love

My first memories of Janet are of her as a vibrant teenager. Being a friend of her little sister, Kaaren, I remember thinking how absolutely wonderful she was. I can still see her smile and hear her voice. I also remember visiting her and Sam when they were first married (in Parkersburg)and recall how happy she was. I know that she will be greatly missed. I will be thinking about all of you. Sincerely, Mavadell Bailey

To Sam and Denise: There are a million things I could say to you today about Janet - all the wonderful childhood and young adult memories - there are a million of them. What I want you to carry with you is how very much I loved her, she was a wonderful friend to me, she was always bright and upbeat. A smart girl, an unselfish girl, a kind girl. When it's all said and done, what I want you to know is that she was kind to me every single day that we spent together, always, always; never a harsh word to me. She was a great friend and I know she will have many stars in her crown for how she treated all of us. I am devastated and will always miss her. I loved her and I love you. Diana Harper Poe

I am a nursing student at Marshall University and I also work as a student at the VA. Janet was such a positive influence for me during time I spent in the hospital for school. She always had a smile on her face or something to joke about. You could tell she loved being a nurse and cared for the veterans she served. I'm very sorry for your loss.

To the family of Janet DeMaria: I was a Marshall University student nurse last fall, doing my clinical time at the VA, and Janet was so helpful and patient and kind to us! She really tried to make our clinical experience as positive as possible, despite her own work-load and other responsibilities. She's one of the few nurses who stood out for me, during my clinical experience. I wanted to thank her personally, but never got around to it, and now all I can do is let you-all know how kind she was to us nursing students. My condolences to you for your loss. Janet helped a lot of people, and left a part of herself with all the nursing students she encouraged.

As a nursing instructor for Marshall University, one of my greatest joys was watching Janet teach the senior nursing students about nursing. She was very concerned they feel welcome and appreciated. We would tease her and call her "Flo" after Florence Nightingale...she so loved being a nurse. Several years ago she started a tradition (at the end of the fall semester) of presenting to each student a handmade crocheted snowflake for their Christmas tree. She would laughingly tell them "In life you meet alot of people...some are flakes; and you just met your first flake"; meaninging Janet. She touched many students and all have very fond memories of their time at the VAMC and especially Janet's smlile and enthusiasm about nursing. I can't believe she won't be there in August when I bring my next group of senior nursing students. I hope I have conveyed just how much Janet was admired, appreciated and loved by myself and all my students over the past 8 years. I am so sad for us...she truly will be missed. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Let me say how so very sorry I am to Sam and Denise for your loss. I have worked with Janet over the years at the VAMC. Janet always gave of herself to others. She was always concerned with her patients, and always put their needs first. She was a great friend to everyone who new her. She always had a smile and a kind word.Sometimes we would have our break at work at the same time even tho we worked in different departments. It was nice to just sit down for a moment and collect your thoughts. Not Janet, always talked about either a patient and how worried she was or about a co-worker that she had'nt saw for awhile. Everyone else came first to her. But,then that was Janet. There was a memorial on 5 South today at the VA. So many people came together to honor our friend, our co-worker. Hearing Carl Beatty tell stories, brought smiles to our faces, with wonderful comforting words from Chaplin Rose. It was such a wonderful heartfelt time that we could all come together and show how much we loved Janet, and that she'll always be remembered with a beautiful smile on her face. I love you my friend.

I'll truly miss seeing her wonderful smile. May God be with you all at this difficult time.

Janet was a very good team worker with Chaplains on 5 South at the VA Medical Center. Janet greatly cared about the spiritual needs of her pt's as well as their health needs. Janet would inform me of patient needs and concerns. Janet had a very good sense of humor and also had a compassioniate and caring spirit to patients and families. I was deeply saddened upon hearing of her passing away. All the nursing staff and others who worked with Janet were in shock upon hearing of her sudden death. My prayers are with Sam and the family as they prepare for the funeral. Janet was always very kind and helpful to me for the many years that I knew her. May she rest in peace and find the eternal happiness she so deserves with God. May she rest in the kind and loving hands of the Lord. Today, on 4/24/07 at 11:00AM, at the VA medical Center, we had a memorial service for Janet in the 5 South conference room. Over 65 nurses and other employees were in attendance. We express our deep grief and pain over Janet's death. We shared the many accomplishments that Janet provided in her profession as a nurse. The strong attendance for the Memorial on 5 South floor shows how many individual lives that Janet touched in such a good way. May the Lord be with all of Janet's family durng this ifficult time. My prayers and thought are with the family and friends. Chaplain Oscar Rose 4/24/07
