He was born October 7, 1945 in Huntington, WV, to the late John Russell Hogg and Charlotte Gardner Hogg. John graduated from Barboursville High School and received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marshall University. His teaching career included Ona Middle School, Barboursville High School and Cabell Midland High School. Although he had retired as a full time teacher, he was still in demand as a substitute teacher. A celebration of his life will be held at Cabell Midland High School on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in John Paull’s memory be made to the Cabell County Schools Foundation, Inc. Box 446, Huntington, WV 25709 or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are being handled by Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace. I am deeply saddened to learn Mr. Hogg left us years ago. Just a couple hours ago I finally found my letters, cards, and other saved mementos from him. Not only did he help me through some hard times, but he shared some very personal information/situations with me. I will forever be grateful for his kindness, honesty, and love. I regret not staying in touch. But he left an imprint on me that I will never forget and he will stay in my heart forever. Rest in peace JP.

I thought about Mr. Hogg today. He was a very big influence on who I am today. Easily in my top three teachers, ever, he did a fantastic job preparing us for college exams. I'll never forget 10th grade World History 1991-1992. Outside of class, he was a great man who is still missed to this day

This man influenced me to become a social studies teacher. After I got my M.A. I went to Virginia. I recently retired from the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice. Most of my years were at Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center.

After all these years, I still think often of Mister Hogg. While watching my still-favorite show, "Law & Order", I remember how - thankfully - Mr. Hogg educated me about what being a lawyer would entail in his elective class, "Law and Legal Processes". (Yes, I still remember the class.) I decided being a lawyer wasn't for me. What I became, instead, is a relentless advocate for social and environmental justice. I was, and still am, honored to share a common sense of fairness, justice and compassion with him, and I still draw strength from those lessons today. (Yes, I even kept all my notes from his classes - history and other.) I've achieved a Bachelor's and Master's degree, and I still refer back to Mister Hogg's high school lessons. I'm deeply saddened that he can no longer serve generations to come... But I have great faith that his legacy lives through those of us who remember.

Mr Hogg I miss the fun times in class talking about political elections. And always showing me the love of our country. You also showed me how education is a very important part of life! You were a very good friend and mentor.

I was so sorry to hear about J.P.'s passing. He brought much laughter and guidance to my life. Although I was never his pupil in school, he taught me plenty during his life. His spirit and sense of humor and great capacity to love will be greatly missed. Thanks for everything J.P.! My world is a little darker without you in it but I relish the memories. Love, Robin

I met John Hogg in 1961 at Barboursville High School. We were very close friends and competitors at the local pool hall in Barboursville. We have a lot of great memories and discussions of the world politics. John was a wonderful gentleman and teacher. Our mothers were very good friends. I will miss you Mr Hogg. To Mr. Hogg's family. It was with great sadness that I recently learned of his death. I was a devoted student of his when at BHS and later a friend. Though I later lost contact, he came to my mind frequently. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Most sincerely and with peace, Danielle Dolin Bane

I came to Marshall University as a faculty member in 1968 and was in the School/College of Education until I left for USM in the summer of 2003. While here in Huntington, I met many fine teachers, but John Hogg will always stand out in my memory. He believed it was his responsibility to induct student teachers into the profession of teaching, and he did so with an unusual combination of kindness and bluntness that helped forge many other fine teachers for Cabell County. I do not remember him with sadness; I only remember him primarily with gratitude for the wonderful job he did for education and for Marshall. He was truly a great friend.

Although I only had J.P. as a substitute teacher while I was in high school at CMHS from 2001-2005, he taught me above and beyond what many other teachers were even capable of doing. He was not just a teacher to me - he became a close friend, mentor, and confidant of mine over the years and was someone I knew I could rely on for advice, encouragement, support, and a smile and hug to brighten my day. J.P. understood me better than most people I've ever known have been able to, and there was never a time I didn't feel like I could tell him whatever was on my mind, good or bad. He taught me so much more than just the lessons he was scheduled to teach - he taught me to accept myself for all my "flaws" and quirks and to love the person I am, because he loved me for all of those reasons. I moved to Chicago last year and was sad to go because I knew I wouldn't be running into him all the time, but we kept in touch through cards and letters, and strangely enough, I sent him the last card I'll ever send his way the week before he passed. It was an Ellen DeGeneres card that had made me laugh, and I instantly thought of him and how much he would enjoy it. J.P. was a class act, top notch man with character, integrity, and one of the best personalities of anyone I've ever known. He will truly be missed and his life will be celebrated. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to family and friends, and to all of those whose life he touched and who knew him.

To Family and loved ones of John Paul Hogg, I wish to expressto you my heartfelt sympathy at the passing and most unfortunate loss of a solideducational personality. I have known John Paul since my efforts as a teacher of social studies at Milton High school and I continued to grow in respect, admiration and immense gratitude for his committment and dedication to his chosen profession through my tenure with him at Cabell Midland. As a teacher, John Paul, set the standard for other teachers who are likewise striving to make a difference in the lives of their students. As a teacher, John Paul, not only demonstated a level of professionalism that encouraged and spported his collegues, but most importantly, challenged and gave direction and leadership to all students, even beyond his retirement. As a teacher, John Paul provided and lived a belief in the future of young people that not only all studnets can learn, but also that students can achieve and experience succes in admirable and productive endeavors. As a friend, Joh Paul was truly a man for all seasons, no matter the gheights of one's achievement or depths of one's despair, he would provide the comfort, encoragement, and the mentorship to help to keep the focus of a positivie direction for all of those who knew him and were fortunate to have call him friend. I will miss him.

My condolences and prayers to Mr. Hogg's immediate family and his "family" at B'ville and CMHS. If half the teachers ih this country took the initiave to work with and interact amoung their students both in and out of the classrom- and later on their lives- then perhaps we would not be experiencing what we are today in the educational system. J.P. seemed to relish in not being pigeonholed into one form or stereotype: to wit- one day dressed like a hard-core biker; the next a leprechaun. Sir, you will be truly missed. Wherever you are now in your "second life", may they have a channel devoted to nothing but M*A*S*H reruns 24/7. Scot Hemnann B'ville Class of '86

I can never dream of having such a powerful impact on people as he did. We were blessed to have the JP Hogg experience in life! ((((((John Paul))))) will live with us forever! PEACE to his family.

I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Hogg. I was a student of his from 1984-1988 and completely enjoyed my relationship with him. Mr Hogg was a progressive thinking teacher who inspired us all to think outside the box and view the world from a new perspective. I really appreciate that quality in him much more today as an adult than I could have ever as a student. As a teacher he went so far above and beyond his duties as a classroom teacher and become an adult mentor to many of us. After graduating from BHS I was the lucky recipient of many of his holiday letters and clippings of fun cartoons and letters while in college. I really looked forward to receiving these and he was always a #1 teacher on my list to visit when I'd come back to Huntington during college breaks. He's a true embodiment of what a teacher should be - a person to open a student's mind and inspire us to greatness both as students and citizens of life. Today I celebrate the wonderful inspiration he was in my life and hope you will find peace knowing that he was such an invaluable and positive influence on the lives of many of his students.

Whenever John Paul was in the halls of CMHS, we were all sure to be greated with a smile and a positive word! He never forgot a student or a friend. He was my husband's teacher over 35 years ago, yet JP talked about him like it was yesterday. He had a positive influence on everyone he met.

When my father died in 1985, we came into possession of his many, many neckties. Sarah and Patrick saw the ties and said "Mr. Hogg has to have some of these for his collection!!" So they sorted through . . .Sarah remembered one with a large eagle . . and I think Valerie delivered them to Mr. Hogg. He was truly one of the good teachers at BHS.

J.P. was my first high school teacher at Barboursville High School for World Cultures in 1987. He was one of the most enjoyable teachers I ever had. On the other hand he was a co-worker at Cabell Midland High School with me. He touched many kids lives and I have a better appreciation for his special gift. Last time I talked to him I was with my two daughters before school started this year, John was making bulletin boards for the high school, and I told both of my daughters that he was my first high school teacher. He will be missed by all of the people he has touched.

I am deeply saddened by the news of John Paull’s passing. He was a great teacher and friend. I wasn’t easily inspired as a student, but “The Boss” figured me out quickly and he lit a fire in me that still burns today. JP was a part of my high school experience that I didn’t want to leave behind. I visited him whenever I could and I have many fond memories of sitting in his living room, where he continued to introduce me to new ideas, books and music. Of course, there were always a lot of laughs shared as well. Regrettably, I lost touch with John Paull after my parents moved away and I got busy raising my own family, but I’ve thought of him often over the years and the memories never fail to bring a smile to my face. JP was one of my heroes . . . he made a big difference in my life and so many others. I'm thankful to have known him. Rest in peace my friend!

Mr. Hogg will be greatly missed by all. The lives he touched throughout his tenure with the school board, and especially the past students of Barboursville High School. I had the opportunity to have him as a teacher my 9th grade year of high school for as legal class. I really enjoyed having him as a teacher. He has taught me a lot of things that I did not know. Even after high school he had not changed. I am sure that everybody that had him as teacher can say “Mr. Hogg was there for the students, and wanted the students to achieve the best in their lives”. JP was THE best educator Cabell County Schools had. I only had JP has a substitute, but learned valuable information every time he taught class. I really got to know JP my senior year and kept in touch with him after I graduated from high school. He was my favorite teacher and always knew how to put a smile on your face. He inspired me to think critically and globally, and he challenged me to seek understanding of other perspectives. Many of his teachings have helped me in my ministries of teaching, preaching, and advocacy of people from other cultures. HE truly cared about his students and their success. Once he even let me repeat a test when he found out I had been unable to concentrate because of the loss of a pet the night before. The light of his life lives on in the work and hearts of all whom he taught. Thank you for sharing him with us. Rev. Tom Lilly Barboursville High Class of 1989 New Orleans, Louisiana

My condolences and prayers go out to the family of John Hogg's death. My brother, my sister and myself all had the pleasure of being in his classes at BHS mine being the class of '91. His teaching went so far beyond the classroom and I still tell people about him today. He will always be remembered fondly in my heart and to all those lives he has touched over his many years of educatiing. He didn't just teach the coursework he taught life lessons and I was blessed to be fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to sit in his classroom. His legacy of education will live on through all of his students."A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops" -Henry B Adams.

John Paull Hogg was a mentor and an inspiration to me. He challenged me to be successful in the classroom and inspired me to become a teacher myself. Attending Mr. Hogg's social studies class was one of the things I always looked forward to during my years at Barbourville High School. I owe a great deal to Mr. Hogg and will miss him deeply. Rest in peace J.P. Don Pace Barboursville High Class of 1982

My brother, sister, and I enjoyed and often regale the classroom experiences from Mr. J.P. Hogg’s class at Barboursville High School. Charismatic, anomalous, and genuine describe the character of this wonderful educator. He passionately led his students to think objectively about the world in which we live. I am certain that he influenced and encouraged multitudes more students than just us three. I will forever be grateful for his kindness and wisdom.

I was a student blessed to have Mr.Hogg as a teacher. I can honestly say even years after graduating high school I still remember some of the lessons he taught me. He taught not only classroom knowledge in his classroom but was able to teach real life. Mr. Hogg had an impact in my life that will last forever and I appreciate him everyday for it. His life truly was a legacy.

I can remember a man who was cool with his students, and even took break time to be with some of those outside of class. Futhering the teacher / student relationship beyond the class room. I will surely remember him for that. He was the "make a difference teacher of the early 70's".

I'm sorry to hear of Mr. Hogg's passing. To me, Mr. Hogg was a teacher that I remember as a friend and with a smile. His sense of humor made his class one that you looked forward to. I invited him to my wedding six years after I graduated. His RSVP read...I'll come, but I have to warn you. So far each student's wedding that I've attended has ended in divorce! I didn't see him there, but his signature was in the guestbook. A dedicated educator, an unforgettable character, and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Thank you . . . for being my teacher, for being my friend. You left too soon. See you on the other side -- I know you'll be there.

John was truly a unique person-especially his fashion sense:). He made a difference in many lives. I had the opportunity to work with John and then my kids had the opportunity to experience John "the teacher". They dearly loved him- he seemed to speak their language and unlike many teachers today-he truly enjoyed working with young people. John will be greatly missed but the memories he leaves behind make me smile even on such a sad day as this - and that is exactly the way he would want it.
