Herman Hanley Wood, age 87, of Patriot (Gage Community) died Sunday September 7, 2003 at Holzer Medical Center. Born August 2, 1916 at the family residence in Gage, he was the son of the late John J. and Laura Hunt Wood. Herman was the youngest of 12 children, and preceded by brothers and sister: Aubra, Clifford, Hayden, Paul, Willard, Howard, John Alton Wood, Esta Frye, Jessie Wood and by 1 infant brother, and 1 infant sister.
Herman retired from the Gallia County School System where he drove a school bus for 36 1/2 years. He also operated the family farm. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church where he served as a Past Trustee, Sunday Schoo Teacher, and Sunday School Superintendent, and was currently a Deacon. Other memberships include the Gallia County Soil and Conservation, where he was a past director, Patriot Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the former Patriot Grange.
On August 22, 1945 he married Bernice Graham at the Graham family home in Northup. To this union was born 2 Children: Ruth (Bruce) Smith of Springfield and Lloyd (Marlene) Wood of Patriot. 3 Grandchildren: Aaron Smith of Springfield, Nathan Wood and Evan Wood both of Patriot.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday September 10, 2003 at Salem Baptist Church with Pastors Carroll Roberson and Bill Hall. Burial will follow in Salem Cemetery. Friends may call at the Waugh-Halley-Wood funeral home on Tuesday form 6-9 P.M. and at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to services. Pallbearers will be: Aaron Smith, Nathan, Evan, and Gene Wood, David Davis, and John Gills.
