Robert L. Evans Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1918 - 2007

Robert L. Evans Robert Lewis “Bob” Evans, 89, Gallipolis, OH., passed away on 21st day of June, 2007, of complications due to a stroke. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Stanley Lewis Evans and Elizabeth Lewis Evans; daughter, Gwendolyn Elizabeth Kayser; and sisters, Jerry Miller and Eva Jenny Mills.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Jewell Victoria Evans; children: Stanley Lewis (Tami) Evans II, Robbin Lewis Chamberlain, Deborrah Anne (Paul) Donskov, Robert Stephen (Rebecca) Evans and John Robert Evans; grandchildren: Stanley Lewis Evans III, Andrew Lewis Evans, Robert Christopher (Susan) Evans, John Maxwell Chamberlain and Catherine Alexandra Chamberlain, Michael Stanley “Misha” Donskov, Anthony Stephen Donskov, Matthew Alexander Donskov, Barton (Jill) Douglas Kayser, Leigh Ashley (Dan) Gorman, Tracer James Evans, Taylor Lee Evans; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Bob was born 30 May, 1918, in Sugar Ridge, Wood County, Ohio. Due to family hardships, Bob attended four different first grades in his first year of grammar school and as a result, he never learned to read well and he’d be the first one to tell you. However, that never stopped Bob. By 1937, he graduated from Greenbriar Military School in Greenbriar, WV, with honors in Arithmetic, Geometry and the prestigious Rifle Team. He was later conferred a member of the Greenbriar Hall of Fame. From 1937 - 1939, Bob attended the Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine; forced to withdraw due to chronic migraine headaches.

In 1940 he married Jewell Victoria Waters of Circleville and at that time he opened a small Malt Shoppe in downtown Gallipolis which he operated until he was called in to the US Army to serve his Country in 1943. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned home for the birth of his third child. At this time he opened the ten stool Steak House with Herb Bush and in the same year began making sausage for distribution. He worked nearly all the time, finding only a little time here and there to fish, hunt (his passions) or look for a farm to purchase. In 1952, Bob purchased the old Niamiah Woods Farm from Rio Grande College. This farm would later become the now famous Bob Evans Farms.

In 1953, outside investors, father Stanley, uncle Emerson, Casey McKenzie, cousin Tim, Morris Haskins and Harlan Martin were added to Bob’s budding sausage company and his family was moved to the Rio Grande Farm.

It was during the 1960's that Bob served extensively as director on the Ohio and American Quarter Horse Assn. Board. He also found time to plant more than 200,000 trees and shrubs, providing wildlife habitat on his newly acquired farm. Bob is the only man in the State of Ohio to be honored three times by the National Wildlife Federation. He was honored with the “Bald Eagle Award”, the highest conservation award in Ohio, by the League of Ohio Sportsmen.

He is the only Lifetime member of the 4-H Organization and is also a 4-H Hall of Fame Member. Bob is well known for his 4-H Colt Giveaway Program which gives forty four colts per year to deserving 4-Hers. He is known for his annual 4-H competitive trail rides and for helping to save the Spanish Barb Mustang as he brought a small herd of Medicine Hat mustangs from N. Mexico and Utah to Bob Evans Farms in 1972 where they flourished and thrived. He became the first president of the Spanish Barb Mustang Breeders Assn.

In 1977 he was appointed to the Ohio Board of Regents where he served thirteen years. In 1978 he received the Governor’s Award and later was inducted into the Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame.

But, if you could ask Bob today, he would tell you it was his dedication to year round grazing and innovative pasturing techniques that he championed to help the small farmers keep their family farms. This has been his biggest contribution to Ohio’s farmers and to their families.

His most enduring legacy, the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education, OACHE, established by Bob through the Board of Regents in 1993 and centered at Shawnee State University, Portsmouth, which gives assistance to twenty-nine Ohio and WV Counties. The OACHE places emphasis on “access to opportunity” and promotes higher education to both youth and adults. His passion had been his devotion to encourage more and more Appalachian residents and especially Ohioans to go to college and to lead students out of poverty and into a better quality of life.

Other memberships include the Morning Dawn Lodge, 7, Gallipolis, a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, a 33rd Degree Mason, Gallipolis Shrine Club.

Funeral Services, open to the public, will be held 1:00 PM., Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in the Lyne Center Gymnasium, University of Rio Grande, Rio Grande, Ohio, with Rev. John Jackson officiating. Private interment will follow in the Mound Hill Cemetery under the direction of the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, 420 First Ave., Gallipolis. Military Grave Side Rites and the presentation of the American Flag will be conducted by the Gallia County Veterans Service Organizations.

Friends may call Monday, June 25, 2007, at the Bob Evans Farms Hall, University of Rio Grande, on Monday, 1:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 9:00 PM. Masonic Services will be conducted on Monday, 9:00 PM., by the Morning Dawn Lodge, 7, Gallipolis.

A Memorial Service with limited seating will be held 2:00 PM., July 7, 2007, at the Mershon Auditorium, Ohio State University, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH.

In lieu of flowers, The Evans Family encourages well wishers to donate memorial gifts to the newly established OACHE Bob Evans Memorial Fund for Scholarships, Payable to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio, P.O. Box 456, Nelsonville, OH 45764.

Debbie: Do you remember long ago in Mrs. Brannon's first & second grade classes when we planted seeds in our little cups of potted soil? The roots went down and the sprouts grew upward & none of us knew how or why? But in the end, the plant completed it's life cycle and died...and like your father so shall we. Such is the nature of things. Your father lived a full and purposeful life. Any man would envy his enormous success in business which is not to be overshadowed by his equally great success in his roles of husband, father, neighbor, citizen and humble servant. His legacy & fingerprints on this good earth will live on after our own passing. I was saddened to hear of your dad's passing. Our deepest sympathies go out to you & your family. Regretfully, I was unable to attend the funeral and pay my respects to a truly great man. However, I did stop by your old "Homestead" the following week. As I sat out on the front porch, I reflected back over a time long ago before his fame, notoriety & enormous business success. It brought back memories from a long time ago in the early 60's. You were probably unaware but your father gave my mother a job following my father's debilitating & disabling heart attack. Your father in effect saved us from destitution and I have never lost sight of this great act of compassion. Also, during my first two years of high school, I worked at Wade Evan's Service Station Service Station in Rio Grande during school weeknights & weekends. I would often service your father's vehicles as well as washing what seemed to be a never ending parade of sasuage delivery trucks. It was hard to balance school work, participate in athletics & earn my own keep. When your father would come around & when Wade wasn't watching, your dad would often sneak a dollar in my rear pocket. Back then, a dollar meant that I could buy school luches for a week or maybe cover half the cost of a pair of jeans. He never said anything but I could see a twinkle in his eye and I sensed that he was empathetic with what hard work was all about. I've always felt a connection with your dad for the kindness & generosity that he showed for me. Over the years, I have often boasted to many of my business associates that I knew your father back before his enormous business sucess. Anyone who has lived in & around southern Ohio over the past 50 years or so can lay claim in some small part of your father. He has touched the lives of thousands of individuals in a positive way as well as performing immeasurable common good. In closing, the honor & priviledge of crossing paths with your father many years ago even in such a small way was all mine. I've not been in awe of very few men throughout my life, but of the few that there were, your father was among the top of the heap. He was a hero and an inspiration to many of us. Rest assured that there are thousands quietly sharing your loss all the while celebrating his great life. Blessings to you & your family, Dan Crothers

To the Evans Family, As I read the paper I was saddened by the loss of a really nice man, who's kindness runs thruout the family. It made me pause to remember a girl scout canoe trip down Raccoon Creek when the weather was just miserable. As the group leader it was hard to be upbeat. Along came Steve who offered a spot for us to camp for the night and dry out. Later Bob came by and offered to take us all to the outdoor play. The kindness extended to the gilrs had them calling him "Uncle Bob". Thses are the things that live on, these are the things that are remembered, a measure of a man and a family. Deepest sympathy

Debbie, Paul, Anthony, Misha, and Matt, and Extended Family, We want to send our condolences to each of you with the loss of your loved one. It has to be a very hard time for all of you. We have fun memories of Bob Evans at the boys graduation parties in Westerville and his hat that he wore that said Bob Evans! He was a very proud grandpa of the Donskov boys! After reading the article in the Columbus Dispatch and his obituary, you should all be very proud of all that he did with his life with his community service and dedication to mankind and animals. He really had so many wonderful causes that he believed in and contributed to in so many ways. We plan to come to his Memorial Service in July at OSU to help celebrate his life of meaning for his family and his many beliefs and interests. We hope that you can remember the many good times and things he stood for in this time of honoring your dad, grandpa, and father-in- law. Love to all of you and your are in our thoughts and prayers. Our heart's go out to you and your family. Mr Evans as we called him gave so much to the community and to the horse world. I will always remember the day I came down to the farm with my cutter who was bred and raised on the fsrm in Bidwell, while riding Mr. Evans came down and played with our daughter in the sand ring making sand castles we laughed and said when she was older we would remind her of that day and many others on the farm. Bob raised many fine cutting and reining horses.

Jean and I would like to express our personal condolences to you on the passage of our 89-year old friend, Bob. He often spoke of you, and we are both pleased that you were able to enjoy 67 years of marriage. I have many fond memories of Bob, particularly when he served as a member of the Ohio Board of Regents. During much of his tenure he served as Chairman of the two-year college committee and often met with me and the presidents of our two-year institutions. When we were discussing new programs, he expressed some concerns with some of the issues but generally had an open mind to what is best for the students and Ohio economy. On a personal note, I recall one visit to your home where your daughter was particularly interested in introducing her son, Maxwell, to someone who also had the name of “Max.” At that particular time he thought that was an odd name and never knew anyone with the name of Max. On another visit to Bob Evan’s country, President Paul Hayes, the local Game Warden, Bob, and I went grouse hunting--I believe it was for grouse. It was an interesting day, but it so happens that the Game Warden was the only one to bring home a couple of birds. One of my grandsons, who lives in Missouri, enjoys hunting wild turkeys, particularly with bow and arrows. Every time we discuss this, I mention to him that a friend of mine, Bob Evans, was primarily responsible for bringing wild turkeys back to Ohio. Another event that stands out in our relationship was Jean and I visiting with you and Bob on a couple of occasions when you spent the winter at Wickenburg AZ. On one occasion Bob took us to play golf and seemed to be more interested in how many lost golf balls he found than his score. We have many fond memories of Bob and all of his activities to improve life for the people, particularly in southeastern Ohio. We regret his passing, but he will always be remembered as a person who really cared about others and a personal friends. Max and Jean Lerner

He was a visionary who never forgot his roots. Our hearts have been heavy since we heard of the passing of your wonderful husband and father. What a great man. Mr. Evans served as the greatest example of how a man of substantial means can lend a helping hand to his community, and in doing so, enrich so many lives. He never stopped serving his community, and he always sought out new ways to help his fellow man. He has left a beautiful and inspiring testament. Our youth fishing organization, the OBJC, was fortunate to meet Mr. Evans a few years ago when he made an unexpected visit to Canter's Cave 4H Camp while we were conducting our annual Spring Fishing Camp. He was very interested in our program, and spent much of his visit talking to our young girls and boys about fishing and the other subjects they were learning that weekend. We were all very much impressed with his humanity and warmth. We will fondly remember this great gentlemen and use his example of charity and service to inspire us to continue contributing our time and effort to mentoring the youth of Ohio concerning sports fishing, conservation, and environmental stewardship. God Bless You and Your Family, and know that you are in our heartfelt prayers. - Ken Adkins, OBJC President

To the Evans faily: I was so sorry to hear of Mr. Evans' death. My parents (George and Helen Bush) always spoke highly of Bob and Jewell, and my mother was good friends with Bob's sisters. My father loved to tell stories of living across the street from the Evans family on Second Avenue. I fondly remember all the gatherings I attended (community, church, school, and private parties) where Bob was present with his smile and humor. I went to high school with Debbie, and would like to extend special condolences to her. May all of you find peace and comfort knowing what a wonderful legacy of good memories and generous acts Bob left. He made a real difference in the world and in Gallia County. --Susan Bush

Dear Jewell and family, We have been so moved by the passing of Bob. He is someone I remember knowing my entire life. I remember the many Sunday mornings, when he would stop by our farm to visit and go on and on with my dad (Benson) about farming. They loved to tease each other. I last saw Bob this past fall, and when he started to walk away, he stopped and said, "I still miss your dad". The men of that generation are so special, and expecially Bob Evans. God Bless you all, Lynn Jones Rees

I have so many fond memories of my time spent at the farm during my childhood. That sort of environment that Uncle Bob and Aunt Jewel so generously provided made a difference in the direction of my life. I have long had a sense of the deep caring for the land, environment and animal husbandry that was always present in everything that Uncle Bob touched. Together the two made me aware of the need for preserving the native habitat and the historical legacy that was ours. I am sending my deepest regards for the loss with which the family is dealing. May their sorrow be tempered with our Lord's unending comfort and sustaining power. Nancy Waters

Originally from Huntington, WV but now live in Belhaven, NC, we all remember Bob Evans farm and all the good food.
