John  BarryJohn "Jack" Barry 86 of Burkeville, Texas died at his home in Toledo Village on Friday, March 12, 2010. Private Memorial services will be held at Forest Oaks Chapel on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. He was born on May 23, 1923 in West Haven, CT to Mabel Fredenburgh Barry and John David Barry. He attended school in West Haven, graduating in 1942. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and served in active engagement with the enemy on Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. He was on Iwo Jima when the American flag was raised. He received an honorable discharge in December 1945 as a sergeant. He attended Western State College in Gunnison, CO where he earned BA and MA degrees. His career in education took him from Colorado to California to Guam, where he moved from classroom teaching into administration. From Guam he moved to Pohnpel in Micronesia to serve as principal of the high school, a boarding school for students from all of the Trust Territory. He was promoted to Education Administrator for Pohnpel district, moved from there to Hawaii where he was top salesman in the state for educational equipment. He left Hawaii to work for seven years in educational administration for the Department of Education, Government of America Samoa. He is survived by wife, Marilyn Barry of Toledo Village; daughters, Jan and husband, Bob Carroll of Poughkeepsie, NY; Debra and husband, Ken Burnside of Conifer, CO; Marta and husband, Pete Richardson of Kingwood, Texas; brother, Don and wife, Nancy Barry of Long Island, NY; sister, Joan and husband George Kling of Bradford, CT.; four grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. The family wishes to thank Saint Christopher's Home Healthcare, Odyssey Hospice, and Toledo Village Baptist Church for their care and support. Marilyn we were shocked and saddened at John's death. He was such a remarkable man and we always enjoyed the times we spent together. We will be praying for God to give the strength you will need. I was a student at Burkeville High when Mr. Barry was employed there. He was a quiet, dignified man that made an impression on me. He will be remembered fondly.

Marilyn, I offer sympathy and prayers to you and your family on the death of your husband. I understand he has been ill for some time, and I know his death must leave a void in your life. Our faith tells us that God will help you to fill that void by knowing he is in a better place.
