1925 - 2012

Gayle Baldinger Cahal, 87, was born on August 2, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She died on December 21, 2012 in Jasper, Texas. She was the daughter of Florence Smith and Edward Bleike Baldinger. Gayle grew up in New Orleans with her siblings, Edward, Jr, Beatrice "Boo" and George. She graduated from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University with a BA in Music. Gayle married Robert Ross Cahal, Jr, on September 12, 1947, and they began a wonderful and adventurous life together. In 1954 Gayle and Ross moved to Great Neck, New York where they raised their three children: Linda, Bob and George. Some of her fondest memories were of the family's annual summer vacations on Cape Cod. She served as the director of the Great Neck/Manhasset Head Start Program in the late 60's and early 70's. Gayle never outgrew her love of learning and when Ross's career took them to Washington, DC, she served as a docent at the Smithsonian Institute, before joining the administrative staff. Gayle and Ross retired to Jasper in 1983 and became involved in the community. She was a past member of the Womens Civic Club, served as a H.O.S.T. volunteer and mentor and tutor in the J.I.S.D, served as a docent of the Beaty-Orton House and was a member of the Pineneedles Quilters. Wherever they lived, Gayle and Ross were faithful and active members of the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women, participated in Bible studies and didn't miss a Wednesday night game of Mexican Train until her health prevented it. Gayle was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of fifty-two years, Ross, Jr., a son George, her sister Boo and her brother George. She is survived by her daughter Linda Cahal McTernan of Jasper; her son Robert Ross "Bob" Cahal III and his wife Diane of Dunnellon, Florida; her granddaughters, Jennifer of New York and Zoe of Dunnellon; her brother Edward B. Baldinger, Jr. of Metairie, Louisiana; her sister-in-law, Edie Cahal of Nederland; and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Jasper. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow in the Wesley Center of the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 127, Jasper, Texas 75951; Jasper SHARE, PO Box 1304, Jasper, Texas 75951; Lakes Area Hospice, 254 Ethel Street, Jasper, Texas 75951 or the charity of your choice. Bob and Linda, I just stumbled across this notice of your mom's passing. I have so many fond memories of "Uncle" Ross and "Aunt" Gayle, and our family times together at Great Neck Methodist Church. I've often wondered how you all have been since we went our separate ways. Wishing you well!

"Miss" Gayle brought joy to me everytime I saw her. I wanted to learn to piece quilts and she told me just do it, they don't have to be perfect if they are made with love. I will miss her sitting beside me each Sunday morning.
