Lane Fleming Click for Condolences      Printable Version
Not Listed - 2018

On July 9, 2018, surrounded by loving family in Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Lane Giles Fleming, 90, went to his heavenly home after bravely battling a long and debilitating illness.

He was born November 26, 1927, in New Boston, IL, to the late Daryl Baner Fleming and Ruth Helen Giles Fleming.

The family moved to Ashland when Lane was 14 and his father took a job with Ashland Oil. Lane graduated from Ashland High School in 1945, attended Ashland Junior College for a year and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was honored to serve 22 months during World War II on two destroyers, the USS Lind and the USS Meredith. Always appreciative of history and the arts, the highlight of his military career was being able to see several European countries, the Caribbean Islands and Cuba.

After graduating from the University of Kentucky in 1952, Lane held a number of jobs including three years as a claims adjuster with Liberty Mutual Insurance in Norfolk, VA. While in Louisville for a summer camp with the Air Force Reserves, he met nursing student Evie Poulouin on a blind date and later recalled, "she was so cute and sweet that I wanted to keep her." He proposed within a week, told his boss he needed to move closer to Louisville and they were married a year later on September 4, 1954.

Lane retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1990 after serving 31 years as a revenue officer. He performed a difficult job with kindness and compassion and was appreciated by co-workers and taxpayers alike.

Lane was an active member of Pollard Baptist Church for 47 years where he served as deacon, church clerk, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He later joined Garner Baptist Church where his children were members but his illness prevented him from being more active.

Lane always loved music and after his retirement he spent 17 joyful years with the Singing Kernels Barbershop Chorus under the direction of Carl Taylor. He also enjoyed volunteering at King's Daughters Medical Center spreading goodwill and an occasional song along the way!

The highlight of Lane's life was his family. He gave countless piggyback rides, read countless storybooks and always made time to attend the activities of his four children. He volunteered as a band parent, PTA officer and swim meet coordinator. As a former runner-up in a Mr. Kentucky contest he was still fit enough at age 50 to swim 100 laps in less than an hour for his son's swim team fundraiser! His children were blessed with a father who was very generous with his love, support and encouraging words.

Lane is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Evelyene "Evie" Marie Poulouin Fleming; four children, Bryan Giles Fleming, Susan Victoria Fleming both of Ashland, Diane Marie Fleming Barker and husband, Steve, of Tulsa, OK, and Bradford Lane Fleming and wife, Dana, of Columbia, SC; one dearly loved granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Fleming of Columbia, SC; and his nonpareil caregiver, Steve "Curtis" Wurts of Ashland.

A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with visitation at noon. Long-time friend, Rev. Jon Black will be officiating. Interment will be in Ashland Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101, chospice.org.

Lane's family is so grateful for the loving care those amazing angels-on-earth have provided during this difficult stage in life's journey.
