1941 - 2024
Bob Maxwell, 83, of Barboursville, affectionately known as "Coach" by a multitude of previous students and friends, went to be with his Lord and Savior early Wednesday morning. He exemplified the verse found in 2 Timothy 4:7 that states, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." He was received first and foremost by his heavenly Father. Next his parents, Fred and Fern Maxwell, excitedly greeted him. His loving wife, Nancy Barbour Maxwell, closely followed. Bob was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Barboursville. He loved his church and supported it faithfully. For years he rang the steeple bell, beckoning those in its ear shot to come worship. He taught Sunday School there and helped prepare food boxes for those in need. Bob graduated from Marshall University with a degree in history. While attending college, he also played center for his cherished Thundering Herd. Following graduation, he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. His time there was short lived as he became homesick and returned to Barboursville. Upon his return, he began a teaching career at Barboursville High School where he remained until it was consolidated and moved to Cabell Midland. Many students would later say that he was one of their favorite teachers. His passion was Presidential history, and anyone lucky enough to have him in class now get a lot of Jeopardy questions correct! During his tenure, he coached football and golf thus earning his affectionate nickname "Coach". He earned the recognition of West Virginia Golf Coach of the Year and his golf teams won West Virginia State Championships. Bob had vast and varied interests. He was a member of a harmonica club and participated in public performances. He and Nancy were members of a square-dancing group. He was an avid collector of Presidential memorabilia. He particularly enjoyed buying, selling and trading Presidential campaign buttons. Bob was always a gentle giant and a great sport. Thank you to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington for his end-of-life care. Anyone who would like to honor "Coach" can do so by making a donation to their favorite charity. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2024 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Huntington. Mr. Maxwell was my History teacher at B'ville High (Go Pirates). He instilled in me my love for history which continues to this day. RIP

So sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. He was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew. Bob was 2 years ahead of me at Barboursville High and at Marshall and he was a great athlete, but he always treated me like an equal as did his lifelong friend, Paul Turman. I used to play pickup basketball with the two of them, and they would take me along on fishing and camping trips. I would hitch rides to Marshall with Bob and Paul, and the memories of the playful interaction between those two will stay with me forever. They looked out for me like I was a little brother. I never heard anybody say an unkind word about Bob. He was a special man, and he will be missed🙏❤️

I have great memories of playing football for Coach Maxwell. He brought a ton of enthusiasm to the field and classroom. He was an awesome example of what a teacher, coach and person should be to his students and others around him. He fought the good fight and now his reward is with his heavenly father.

Coach Maxwell was one of my football coaches from 1976 to 1978. Aside from being a great coach, he was a great man. I can tell you that we all had great respect for Coach Maxwell during our time at Barboursville High School
