Dear Ashley, Katie and Renee and family, I want to share my deepest sympathy with you in the loss of your dear father, partner, son and brother. I first met Paul in 1988 while I was taking blueberry samples on his farm and later that fall at a blueberry growers' meeting. Ashley was the cutest little girl and was helping out with running the projector. Paul has been the friendly face shining in the crowd since then, and I remember being amazed at his sports activities and his enthusiasm for growing blueberries. I could not believe it when I heard he passed away, we lost a tremendous person and valuable member of the industry. So long, dear Paul. Annemiek Schilder Michigan State University

Ashley, i am so sorry for your loss. I dont know if you remember me, i am Fidel's daughter. I worked in Paul's fields for about 9 years. I was very fun. Paul was a great boss. he always cared for our well being. He loved going to eat with all my family during our lunch. His favorite were our mexican flour tortillas. and even if the food was spicy he wouldnt stop eating it. Those were fun days. From behalf of all my family, we are all very sorry.

To the Kloote family I am so sorry for your loss. Paul was such a wonderful person and my best friend for a long time. His smile and laugh will be truly missed by many people!! What a shock to open the paper and see his name. I have thought of Paul often over the years and memories have always brought a smile but this last one had me crying all night long. Paul had such a great soul God must have needed him more in Heaven now. He is in some great company there. You are all in my prayers. Darcy

During the time I have lived across the street from Paul, I have enjoyed many evening talks with him, backdropped by the beautiful wooded neighborhood and lake. It was a joy to be his neighbor. Paul will be greatly missed by me.

Paul The Blue Berry Man! Ride on Big Kahuna, Ride on……….. I first met Paul at about age 14. at a party he was having, that I never should have been at. I can’t repeat much of that night nor do I remember, but I do remember waking up in the back of his old truck, on a pile of frozen cow manure, in front of my friend’s house. He told us to, “wake up and go home”. My buddies and I were locked out of his house so we spent the night in our fort. In the morning I remember waking up and being thankful I didn’t have to walk the 12 or so miles from the party to my friends house and that I actually got a good night sleep in that fort and was safe and sound! Paul was 6 years older than I and friend of my older brother. I overheard my brother discussing the party with his girlfriend and it sounded like so much fun to me that I invited all my friends. I always appreciated that Paul didn’t make me (his friend’s punk younger brother) take that long walk home on that cold night. As a kid, I remember Paul being a good ole surfer dude on the beaches of Grand Haven and I clearly remember his picture, riding a big wave on the sports page of the Tribune. I also remember that Paul had a dream of going into blueberries and I remember thinking that he was crazy for wanting to be a farmer but, Paul was serious about it to the point he was already experimenting with crops while still in high school!!! 14 years passed until the day when I looked up from my desk and there stood Paul telling me he wanted to buy a hot little sports car for his “hot” new girl friend. Once we realized we knew each other the sale went nice and easy. Turns out we both ended up down in this neck of the woods, he a blueberry farmer and me a car salesman. We were both into water and snow skiing as well as surfing and boating. We became fast friends and confidants based on mutual backgrounds and hobbies. My oldest brother had passed away and Paul and Scott were friends in the old days. Paul was both a connection to the past and an inspiration for the future in my eyes. I remember seeing the farm for the first time and getting a look at Paul’s real life and the admiration I suddenly gained for being a farmer and living off the land. Berries, as far as I could see, how could someone take care of all those berries? I remember being in awe of the operation and the taste of those blueberries fresh picked from the field! I remember meeting his first daughter and how beautiful she was and is. I remember how happy Paul was when she came to live on the farm and how proud he was of how smart and talented she is. I also remember the birth of Katie and the smile on his face being a Dad again. I remember going water skiing in the hot summer sun and your sand box on the farm. I will always remember the look in his eyes as he watched you laugh and play, live and learn….. I remember my future wife working on the farm while she was still in college, eating blue berries by the handful and riding Coco. I remember the ski trip to Colorado that Winter I lost my job and I remember having second thoughts about spending my last couple thousand dollars to go blow off some steam in the mountains. I remember how cold it was and how much we didn’t care. How much fun we had, how rejuvenated and alive I felt when we got back home! I remember digging potato vines out of the fields one Fall when I had nothing better to do. I remember finding something better to do, and the fact that you, Paul were happy for me! I can’t remember ever hearing about how good or bad of a potato vine digger I was but, in my heart I know I stunk. I’m glad I never heard about it. I remember Paul’s easy smile, dancing to Elvis Costello in the living room with our ladies, and I remember waking up and doing it all over again. I remember things I shouldn’t repeat and hope never to forget them. I remember you telling me how cute Sara’s and my kids would be and that as soon as I was married that we should have them. You were the biggest guy crying at the wedding. This could only come from a man that truly loved and had fun with his own children and the experience of watching them grow. An example of a father’s love and a lost brother we all know was gone to soon. Paul I only hope someday, someone thinks of much of me as I thought and will always think of you. To the family, loved ones and friends of Paul, we share in your pain. We will miss Paul and are proud to consider him a friend. In loving Memory Marc and Sara Faulkner

To the Kloote family. I graduated with Paul and what a fun guy he was. He would take us out in the boat and rip around Spring Lake.It was an activity he loved and shared with a lot of us. I was always met with a smile on the halls of SLHS. What a great spirit he displayed to make everybodys day. My prayers are with you all as these days will be long and tiring. He is in a better place and enjoying the skiing in Heaven. May God be right on your shoulder as you go through the next few days...Nancy (Byl) Darga

Ashley and Katie, Few people get to live their "dream life". Your Dad is one of the lucky few who did. He was proud to be a blueberry farmer. His farming was his work and passion, and he was very good at it. The best part of your Dad was that he did not pretend to be something he wasn't. In an age of "high tech" he lived happily with no cable TV, no computer, and no cell phone. He loved surfing, skiing, boating, ice fishing, riding his Harly, and most importantly your girls. He was so proud of you and loved you very much. We will all miss him very much. Love, Aunt Barb

My favorite memory of Uncle Paul is when he was surfing behind his boat with no handle. Also, hanging out with him around the farm and delivering blueberries. He was super fun! I will always remember him. Love, Jeff
