Janie, On behalf of the Dial Radio Club in Middletown, I would like to express our sincere sorrow on the passing of Vern. We found out a couple of days ago and have been sharing fond memories of him. Funny stories were told about him falling asleep at Field Day while strumming an "Air Guitar". Never did figure out what he was playing. Funny contact's he'd made over the years etc. Sandi and I got to hang out with him at Hamvention in May and he even took me back to my truck on the way out. What a shock to hear of this. I know he had some health issues, but never dreamed it would come to this so soon. We enjoyed having you both at Field Day and out at our place for the sweepstakes contest. Vern will be truly missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you. May God help you find peace through all of this. May you rest in peace dear friend till we meet again. Ed and Sandi Thornsburg and the Dial Radio Club

Vernon was a gentle giant with a huge heart of gold. Coming from a large family, his many cousins aunts and uncles will miss him. Family was important to him. We had recently talked about being together this Thanksgiving because he wanted all of us to be together. I wish I could have said my goodbye's but he knows we loved him and will one day meet again. I will miss you very much.

Vern was a very good friend and always had a smile. We spent many weekends listening to WFGH and loved his collection of music as he shared on the radio. As a fellow ham operator, he would always call the 146.21 repeater in Hanging Rock and let us know he was passing through on his many trips back home to see his parents! We would always track him down at Dayton Hamvention and visit with him. He was truly an inspiration to all those whose lives he touched. We admired Vern's many talents. He will be truly will be missed by all. Bob & Carole

Vernon was a loving and generous man, wholoved life and my father, Kelly Stanfill. We grew up together and our families visited most every weekend during my early life. He enjoyed family reunions and we enjoyed his company. He was there for our family and his Uncle Kelly's illness to the end. I will never forget his support and kind words. We will miss our cousin greatly and mourn our loss.

Vernon was my first cousin. He was a class act in every way. He was a wonderful son to his parents whom he adored, a terrrific brother, a wonderful uncle. I seen Vernon a year ago with my niece and was so thoughtful and genuine. He was such a terrific person and it is such a sad loss for his mother and brother, that I cant imagine. He went to early in life, he deserved more time on this earth. He will be missed. Sandra

RIP Vern. You had so much wisdom in electronics' I remember you telling me a few years ago you had some old tapes of my radio show from the 80's. Working at the radio station back in the late 70's and early 80's was a high point in my life. Thanks for the memories. Vern dedicated his life to helping others as a EMT and public servant.

I can remeber the first time I met met Vern which was in April of 1986. I met him on the Louisa Ham repeater while talking to Tom Lykins. He invited me over to the studios of WFGH radio where he was employed. We immediately hit it off as friends having so much in common including broadcating, Ham Radio, Fire Service, and EMS. During the following years I would often drive to Fort Gay just to visit and talk shop with Vern and on a couple of occasions to Cabell Med-Com where he was a dispatcher. We would allways exchange ideas about electronics, share a joke or two and catch up one another on newsworthy stuff which never made the local newspapers or radio media. Probably our best times were sharing our ideas about electronics pranks. Boy he was full of them. The last time I saw Vern was at the Louisa Ham fest this past May and we recalled how we met, became friends and after 23 years still maintained a friendship due to ham radio. Whether it was ham radio, public safety radio or broadcat radio his unique voice of an air personality will long remain with us whether it was with WFGH or on the ham radio air waves as N8FLZ. He will be missed but not forgotten. I end this tribute by saying 73's to a gentleman of the airwaves.
