1910 - 2007

James GreesonJames Greeson, 97, of Huntington, died Friday, June 15, 2007 in Huntington. He was born April 10, 1910 in Broom’s Island, Md., to the late Rev. Paul Hartwell and Annie Pendleton Greeson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Carmen Miller Greeson, in February 2005. Mr. Greeson was owner and Chairman of the Board of Columbia Paint Corp., Raybo Chemical Co., and D-G Airways, all of Huntington. He had been a member of the Huntington Rotary Club since 1963 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. For 20 years he was a member of the Industry Suppliers Committee, serving on its steering committee for many years. Mr. Greeson was educated at Frankfort Pilgrim College in Frankfort, Indiana, after which he attended Huntington School of Business. He then worked several years as a bookkeeper for Miller Paint Manufacturing Co. in Huntington, which was founded by his father-in-law, Everett Miller, and was the predecessor to the present-day Columbia Paint Corporation. He also worked for a time during his early career days with CIT Corporation of Wheeling. He was a member of the Pea Ridge United Methodist Church, Huntington, for over 50 years and was a former treasurer and trustee for the church. “Old Jim,” as he was fondly known, acquired his private pilot’s license at the age of 75 and enjoyed flying for 15 years, up to age 90. Survivors include daughters Anna Krista and her husband, LaVerne, of Auburn, Ala., Deborah Gentry and her husband, Gary of Salem, S.C.; sons, James Timothy Greeson and his wife Bonita, of Monroe, Mich., and Fort Myers Beach, Fla., and Bruce Greeson and his wife Gayle, of Chester, Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Greeson of Molino, Fla.; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his beloved wife, “Honey-Bunn,” Mr Greeson was also preceded in death by a son, Philip H. Greeson; a brother, Joseph Greeson; and sisters, Martha Louise Bensinger and Elizabeth Hankins Rotz. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Sue Jarrett. Burial will take place at Woodmere Memorial Park. To All Jim's Family, I worked for Jim when we changed from "Miller Paint" to Columbia, back in the early 60's. He was a stern taskmaster, but I learned so very much about management and good, ethical business practices in my time working for him. He was quite a man! My condolences to all! I first met Mr. Greeson in 1958 while a student at Marshall. To me, he was a giant of a man. He served as my mentor in many ways over the past 48 years. I credit him in many ways for what I am today. Mr Greeson, I will miss you. And Anna, Debbie, Tim and Bruce, you were so fortunate to have had such a wonderful father. My sincere condolences to each of you.

"Uncle Jim"---the memories and warm feelings that are packed in that name are too numerous to mention. My childhood was filled with happy times visiting with him, Aunt Carmen, and my fun-loving Greeson cousins at their character-filled yellow house at 6208 Rosalind Road. It was a pleasure keeping in touch with Uncle Jim and Aunt Carmen into my adult years, and we almost always corresponded at birthday time, which always warmed my heart--especially the signatures of those birthday cards: "Love, Aunt Carmen and Old Uncle Jim" signed personally by each of them. I got a kick of how Uncle Jim so often seemed in a hurry to get from one place to another. To this day when one of my family members starts getting a bit inpatient and wants to "get going," I think of how like Uncle Jim he or she is! I'm going to miss taking my boys to see Uncle Jim at The Woodlands but I rejoice that he's finally made it home, where "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." The Lord was so good to give me such a wonderful uncle and aunt, and I look forward to seeing them again someday as we praise our Savior forever in that incredible land where there will be no more sickness, death, or separation.

I spent many hours hanging out next door with your parents when I was young and have very fond memories of both of them. I was surprised to read "Old Jim" was born in Broome's Island - we live about a half an hour from there!! Our love to you all.

What wonderful memories growing up next door to "Old Jim". We loved the Miller paint pencils that were always plentiful, they had square erasers which was so cool. I remember the wonderful jokes and stories that he always had to tell. My sympathies to you all, Anna, Debbie, Tim and Bruce--how fortunate you are to have had your Dad for so many years.

One time Papaw and I were flying up the Chesapeak River and I asked him what I should do if something would happen to him and I needed to take over the plane. He calmly looked over and said "oh, you'll have no problem flying the plane ~ it'll be the landing you'll have difficulty with!" The thing I will forever keep in my heart is the love he had for Honey-Bunn - I believe this was, by far, his greatest lifetime success. I love you Papaw ~ Sweetie Pie.
