1943 - 2007
Lucian Earl Nida, 64, of Huntington, West Virginia, went home to rejoice with his Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, November 28, 2007. Lucian was born on April 12, 1943, in Huntington, WV, the son of the late William Earl Nida and Mary Victoria Gill Nida and was preceded in death by one very special aunt, Nellie Gill, that he loved like a mother. He was a graduate of Barboursville High School. Following graduation, Lucian proudly began serving his country in the United States Army. After three years of service, he returned home and married the love of his life, Patricia Gail Cremeans Nida. He and Pat were blessed with forty wonderful years together. Lucian and Pat have two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela Gail and Willie Purdee of South Point, OH and Mary Beth and Philip C. Roy of Ona, WV. Lucian proudly served his Lord and the body of believers at the Guyandotte Church of Christ as an Elder. Aside from his immediate family, there is no group of people that Lucian loved more or was more proud of than his family at Guyandotte. In 1991, Lucian began the Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) Program at the church as an outreach to the youth of the Guyandotte community. Over the years, because of Lucian’s vision and the guidance of the Lord’s hand, hundreds of children were introduced to and shown the love of Christ. Lucian also served the Lord at Howell’s Mill Christian Assembly Christian service camp in Ona, WV as President of the General Assembly. He loved the church camp and was extremely proud and thankful for what the Lord had blessed his church with. Lucian retired from Inco Alloys after 33 ½ years of dedicated service as a pipefitter. He was also recently retired from the United States Postal Service. Lucian was so very thankful for all of his friends and co-workers at the post office. One special friend, Carol Smith, will always be remembered for her dedication to Lucian and his family. Their kindness and compassion can never be repaid. In addition to his wife, two daughters, and their husbands, Lucian is survived by four grandchildren who loved their Pawpaw with all their hearts, Bethany Caroline Purdee, Jared Russell Purdee, Hannah Elizabeth Roy, and Hunter Andrew Roy. Lucian also has nine surviving siblings and their spouses that he loved and cherished, Ida Mae and Bernard Adkins of Decatur, IL; Wanda and Ken Waddell of Chesapeake, OH; Anna England of Manchester, TN; Mary Jo and Roy Ball of Brownstown, MI; Nellie and Jerry Miller of Circleville, OH; Rosalie and Dale Edmunds of Milton, WV; Herb and Beverly Nida of Chesapeake, OH; Beulah and Joe Hayes of Arcadia, FL; and Bill and Teresa Nida of Salt Rock, WV. Lucian also had numerous nieces and nephews that he thought the world of. The family would like to extend the most sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Susan Moffatt-Bruce and Dr. James Duthie. Our deepest gratitude to Dr. Alejandro Lorenzana for his countless hours of care and compassion. Lucian’s main goal in life was to serve his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to show the Lord’s love to everyone he came in contact with. For the life he lived, the legacy he leaves, and the memories he made, we give all thanks, praise and glory to the One who made Lucian Earl Nida the man he was. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Guyandotte Church of Christ Building Fund, 207 Staunton Street, Huntington, WV 25702. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville and after 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Guyandotte Church of Christ by Minister Willie Purdee. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park, Huntington. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

Uncle Lucian was the father I always wanted. Firmness, fairness. love, and understanding were just a few of his traits I wished for as a child. I was never scared of Uncle Lucian however, I did respect him....his love gave me this feeling. As it has been many years since I have seen him, probably 15, I was deeply saddened at his passing. Aunt Patty, cousin Angie, and cousin Mary Beth....time, distance, and life has pulled me far from you yet you are in mine (and Stuboy's) thoughts often.I hope this letter finds you and finds you well.
Love,
Carl

I just received word that Lucian has gone home. Although it has been several years since I was last in West Virginia, just hearing Lucian's name brought back many wonderful memories of working at camp and being with Lucian at church. My heart breaks for Angie and Mary -- your dad was the greatest and he raised two incredible daughters! My prayers are with you also, Pat -- I will never forget the love that you and Lucian showed me as a young man growing up at Howell's Mill Christian Assembly. Lucian's faith in Jesus Christ has made the eternal difference for a number of people. While I am saddened by the news that his earthly life has ended, I rejoice in knowing that he is now experiencing the fullness of his faith -- living in the presence of His Savior.

Lucian was a great man and always on a mission helping others and always had a smile on his face. It was a priviledge to work with him for a summer at Howell's Mill Camp and great to know him as a friend! He was a great man and will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him. Isn't it good to know with Jesus we will see him again!

Dear Pat, Angie, Mary and family, I am truly saddened and heartbroken at this news. Lucian was the kind of man that everyone should aspire to be. He was very special to me in so many ways...as is the whole Nida family. There are so many memories in my life that include all of you. Lucian made everyone feel like they were a part of his family, and I am crushed to hear that he has passed away and that he had to fight a battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed by so many. May your wonderful memories of him sustain you through this hard time while you lean on God not for understanding, but for comfort and grace. There is just no way that our worldy hearts can understand, but we can stand on God's promises and know that Lucian is in a better place...a place he wanted to be! I so wish I would have known sooner...I would have been there to show my love and support to a family that is still so dear to me. God bless you all now and in the coming days. Love you!! Angie

Words can not explain the emptiness that is in our hearts right now but in my heart I know God will help us through, I did not know Mr. Nida personally but through his children and grandchildren I know what a great man he was. A true friend and more than that to so many. He helped more people than we'll ever know. A pleasure to work with and be around. I have had many people in my life come along that were so important for different reasons. Lucian ranks among the one's at the top of the list, and for more than a few reasons. He is better off now and all that knew him were/are enriched and blessed by knowing him.

I can think of no person with a more encouraging soul than Lucian. Though we can no longer see the light of the Lord shining through him on this earth, we know without a doubt that he is immersed in God's light now in his true home. Pat, I am so sorry for your loss, and the entire family is in my prayers. I pray God embraces you all in His love and helps you through this tough time.

What more can be said about a man like Lucian. He was one of the rare people that no list of platitudes is really necessary because he was the same warm smiling Christian man to everyone he met. Even those of us who weren't close to him feel his loss. May God wrap his arms around the Nida family and comfort them. My love to you all.

It was such a pleasure working with Lucian at Inco for over 30 years. He made it known to all how much his church meant to him. from Roger (PS I could not have planned Roger's retirement party without Lucian-he helped keep the secret and made it so much fun. Will always remember his smile and laughter.--from Judy )

Mrs. Nida & family, I am so sorry for your loss. I considered Lucian my friend. I worked with him at the nickel plant. I was a single mother raising two sons. The first thing Lucian would always ask me when he would see me was how my boys were doing and I always felt he really wanted to know and wasn't just making small talk. He was a wonderful person and he will be missed.

I just met Lucian this past summer at the Huntington PO. In the brief time I got to know him I could tell what a special person he was. And from the outpouring of love and accolades I have heard and read, I know that he is one of the best human beings who ever lived. He shared with me his passion for fishing, and I could tell that same passion carried over to all aspects of his life.

All of our hearts were saddened when we heard of Lucian's passing. Pesonally, in all of my 57 years of life I have never had the privledge of working with such a great man as Lucian. His daily smiles were always something to look forward to and will be surly missed by all of us. He came to us with such a positive attitude for the job and life in general where most men would have had bad attitudes about having to return to the workforce. He touched all of our hearts here in the post office and will be in our hearts and thoughts forever. God really got a good one.

Rob and I are uncle and aunt to Jeff and Tracey Miller. When they lived in Barborsville, we visited often at the church in Guyandotte. We came to know Lucian at those times because he treated us just like family. He was so easy to get to know because of his wonderful personality. While he is now getting his heavenly reward, we pass along our thoughts and prayers to his family members.

I was saddened to hear of Lucian's passing from Hoyt Allen, but rejoice in the fact that he is now home with the Lord.
What a faithful, consistent, positive example of the Christian walk! I will always feel fortunate that I was able to get to know him better during the revival shared there in 2006.
May God bless you as a family during this time of lost. Continue to take comfort in the promises of God that Lucian believed with all of his heart.
