1926 - 2008
Thomas "Mac" McDonie Jr., 82, of Culloden, WV succumbed after a brief illness at his home on Wednesday, December 3. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Huffman McDonie, 2 children, Richard A McDonie of Wilson, NC, Dreama Vanhoose and husband Scott of Culloden. He was a loving grandfather and role-model to five grandchildren-Jason Vanhoose and wife Lisa of Hurricane, WV, Matt Vanhoose and wife Heather of Charleston, WV, Billy McDonie and wife Rhiannon of St. Peters, Missouri, Erica Scales and husband Malek of Culloden, WV, and Tommy McDonie of Culloden, WV; and seven great grandchildren-Evan, Lauren, Anthony, Joshua, Izabella, Jackson, and Ethan. Tom was born on February, 2, 1926, the son of Thomas M. McDonie Sr and Blanche Adkins McDonie of Milton, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by one son Jeffrey Lynn McDonie, one brother Clayton Ford McDonie, and one sister Patricia Ann Oxley. He is survived by sisters, Myrtle Davis and Eloise McDonie, and brothers Eugene, Royce, and Jim McDonie. We would also like to acknowledge our close neighbors and special friends Debra Chaney and Troy Hinkle, who have been so instrumental in his care and support. Thomas was a construction specialist in Germany in the United States Air Force. He retired after 37 years of service from Union Carbide/Dow Chemical where he was a Millwright. He was also the "local small engine repairman" and "handyman" performing services for family, friends, and anyone in need. He was a founding member of the Culloden Volunteer Fire Department, Lions Club, and member of the American Legion Post 139. He was instrumental in Culloden, WV gaining access to public water and sewer; and worked to get Putnam General Hospital established, realizing the need for local healthcare. He was always there to help anyone in need and will be sadly missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton with Pastor Mark Finley and Rev. Brent Beckett officiating. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Sunrise Baptist Church or Union Baptist Church. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.
