Pawpaw, it's more than four years later now, your birthday just passed & we celebrated & brought you some flowers, I hope you like them. I wish you could have been here to see your great grandson, he looks so much like you. We show him your pictures all the time & he calls you Big Pawpaw. Dad goes by Pawpaw, can you believe it?! The reason I'm commenting on this right now is because I kind of feel like I'm talking to you. I miss you so much, we all do. I can't wait to see you again in heaven Pawpaw. Love, Hannah & Cameron

Dear Anna and Family, We wish to express how very sad we were to hear of Steve's passing. He, Derl and Sug spent many years together and were very close during their high school years, how sad it makes us to know that we missed knowing him in the many years that followed. God Bless you all , just know that he is now in a better place. God has a special place in his heart for special people like Steve.

I was very sad to hear of Steves passing. I new Steve back in the 1980s when I was working as an Area Engineer in the West Virginia Division of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in Charleston. Steve and I spent a lot of field time in District 2 on Corridor G and the East Huntington Bridge and in Districts 1 and 9 on completing I-64 and reconstruction of I-77. Steve was truly West Virginia Department of Highways best asset. He was smart, experienced and had a lot good old fashion common sense. I probably learned more about highway construction, the workings of the highway contracting industry and how to maintain good relationships from him than the next ten professional engineers combined that I worked with after Steve. The field work days were always long but they fun too! On our off days we played golf. He of course was much better at the game than I and while my game was pretty bad it didnt seem to matter to Steve. He was in it for the fellowship. I was too!! My sincere condolences to his family and his many friends. He will be very much missed!

My deepest sympathies go out to the Hardin family. I had the honor of working with Steve quite a bit his last four years with the WVDOH. He was a major influence on myself, personally and professionally. No one was more respected or liked. He left this world better than he found it. God Bless.

What a great guy! I worked (and traveled) w/Steve for many years and loved every minute of it. His 12-14 hr. days were more the rule than exception. He was crazy about fried chicken and he made me think I was too! There are many miles of highway in this State that he had a hand in building and many DOH/FHWA persons that were either directly or indirectly influenced by Steve. I am greatly saddened by his passing. May God bless him and his family. He will be missed.

Growing up,I remember Mr. Hardin attending every single baseball game in support of Stephen. When Stephen pitched, Mr. Hardin would stand beyond the dugout, leaning against the fence in quiet approval of his son--regardless of a team win or loss.
He had a wonderful, kind presence and all of Stephen's friend held him in great respect. He was universally considered a giant among those with whom he worked at the WV Div. of Highways.
My family's hearts go out to the Hardins as we are all very sorry for this difficult loss.

I worked with Steve as his secretary for the Division of Highways up until retirement. He was a dedicated worker and friend. He always talked about his children and was very proud of them. He had great love for his wife, Ann and loved her for being such a wonderful mother. Even when work got to be difficult and busy, he always joked and shared the fun and wonderful experiences he had working with the Division of Highways. He will be missed by all his friends and co-workers. I will never forget him.
