Virginia "Ginny" McDonie Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1930 - 2009

Virginia God's grace welcomed home VIRGINIA "GINNY" McDONIE, 79, of Culloden, W.Va., Sunday evening, May 17, 2009, after having succumbed to a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Thomas McDonie Jr., and son Jeffery Lynn McDonie. She is survived by two children, Richard A. McDonie of Wilson, N.C., and Dreama Vanhoose and husband Scott of Culloden. She was a devoted grandmother and friend to five grandchildren, Jason Vanhoose and wife Lisa of Hurricane, W.Va., Matt Vanhoose and wife Heather of Charleston, W.Va., Billy McDonie and wife Rhiannon of St. Peters, Mo., Erika Scales and husband Malek of Culloden and Tommy McDonie of Culloden; seven great-grandchildren, Evan, Lauren, Anthony, Joshua, Izabella, Jackson and Ethan. Ginny was a proud native daughter of Jackson County, West Virginia, born February 14, 1930, the daughter of Alfred A. Huffman and Mary Moffatt-McCown. Surviving Virginia are brothers Sebert Huffman and wife Joyce of Goldtown, Larry McCown and Bruce McCown and wife Jan of Port Arthur, Texas, and sister Becky Sonner and Bud of Columbus, Ohio. She was a former employee of General Cigar and the U.S. Postal Service. Affectionately known as "Ginny Mae," she spent the majority of her life as a devoted homemaker and gifted crafts person. Ginny Mae valued friendships, such as those, like that of Troy Hinkle and Debbie Chaney, family friends that have been instrumental in her care over the past months. For over 52 years, Ginny and husband "Jr." called State Street in Culloden their home. It is here where they watched their children grow, grandchildren played, and they enjoyed lasting friendships with many of the same neighbors and friends. Her warm smile, opinionated perspective, and loving spirit will be deeply missed by family and friends. Virginia was a member of the Union Baptist Church in Milton, W.Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, with Pastor Mark Finley and Rev. Brent Beckett officiating. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Huntington. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.
