Sheldon Eugene "Gene" Laverty, 82, of Milton, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Minister Danny Evans. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery. He was born April 20, 1927 in Milton, WV, a son of the late Samuel and Sarah Ella Hysell Laverty Neal. He was a member of the American Legion # 139, Milton and was a former employee of Goodrich Gulf Company. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Everett Neal and one brother, Paul Laverty. He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Ella and Ronald Canterbury of South Charleston, WV, Sara and Roger A. Clagg of Ona, and Lori Laverty of Milton; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Marsha Laverty of Thomasville, NC; and their mother, Frances Priestley Laverty; seven grandchildren, Amy Clemons, Alison Turley, Jonathan Laverty, Darin Laverty, Travis Clagg, Dewayne Laverty and Jay Canterbury and fourteen great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion # 139, Milton.
