1919 - 2010
Theresa Lewis, 91, of Milton, WV, widow of Leslie W. "Pert" Lewis passed from this earth on September 25, 2010, in Hospice House of Huntington. She was born May 14, 1919, in Putnam County, WV, the daughter of the late Oscar Lee and Louiza Victoria Searles Hicks. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Roy and Kyle Lewis and son-in-law, William Cyrus; also by two brothers, John C. and Fremont Hicks and four sisters, Elsie Hayes, Juanita Templeton, Mola Ashworth, and Beulah Powell. Theresa was a faithful member of Union Baptist Church and a friend to all in their fellowship. As a nurse at Morris Memorial Hospital for Crippled Children she cared for the children and often became friends with their families, visiting with them and inviting them into her home for visits. She was an obstetrical nurse at Cabell Huntington Hospital for 30 years and helped with deliveries of thousands of babies including each of her own grandchildren. After she retired from Cabell Huntington Hospital, she returned to Morris Memorial to help nurse the convalescent patients. She loved nursing and being able to cheer up the patients with her sense of humor. Theresa was an avid quilter and made quilts for each member of her family for graduation, weddings and new babies as well as friends and charities. Theresa is survived by one brother, Clarence R. Hicks, daughter, Shirley Cyrus, son and daughter-in-law, John and Bonnie Lewis, two daughters-in-law, Patricia Lewis and Susie Lewis. She was known as "Nanny" to her 10 grandchildren, Cheryl (Walt) Salamacha, Rodney (Allison) Lewis, Dee (Chester) Henderson, Scott (Cindy) Lewis, Lisa (Darrel) Steed, Bryon (Susie) Lewis, David (Johnna) Lewis, Lee (Melissa) Cyrus, Justin Lewis, and Jodi Lewis and 12 great grandchildren: Jack, Will, Molly, Carleigh, Camron, Josh, and Hannah Lewis, Tyler Steed, Sueanna and Kaydee Fugitt, and Jessa and Nolan Cyrus all of whom love and miss her very much. A celebration of her life will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Wallace Funeral Home in Milton with the Rev. Tracy Mills and the Rev. Brent Beckett officiating. Burial will follow in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 28 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, 3100 Staunton Ave., Huntington, WV, 25702. The family would like to thank everyone at Hospice House for the care of Theresa and the peace they were able to find there. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.timeformemory.com/wallace.

So emotionally sad to read the passing of yet another aunt, and I might add a very special one at that. I never had the opportunity to spend the days with her I would have liked to. But the times our two families spent together were special. We had a bond. And you can't say the Lewis girls didn't make Aunt Theresa laugh. She had a wonderful personality that made everyone love her. I will not forget her soft voice and jolly laugh. I admired her so. Being alone so young and raising her children. And then the sad burden to bury two cherished sons. I will miss Aunt Theresa, she was a jewel. Special thoughts and love goes to you Shirley, John & Bonnie. Love you. Dear Shirley, Bonnie, John and everyone else, I was so sorry to hear of Aunt Theresa"s death. I did not know she had been sick. I was crazy about her . She and I hit it off from the start and she always made me feel like family. I'm sure she, Mom and their little quilting friend, are up there now... quilting and laughing and talking. But especially laughing. No more pain or worry. Love to you all. Suzanne

I worked with Mrs. Lewis for many years at Morris Memorial Nursing Home. She was a great inspiration to both her co-workers and patients. I am sure that she is rejoicing in Heaven. God Bless your family during this time of loss.
