Winning the ultimate race, Gregory Scott Jones, 60, of Barboursville, WV, took heaven’s checkered flag on January 26th, 2025. Greg was born in Lima, Ohio to Jill Fowler and the late Harry Jones on June 25th, 1964. He spent his childhood and young adult years by his Mammy’s (Shirley Seager) side on their beautiful horse farm, Vila Vida Stables, in Lavalette, WV. He graduated from Huntington Christian Academy in 1982, where he met his two life-long best friends, Steve Holley and Brian Watts, who preceded him in death. Greg proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army from 1983-1987. His career history was as varied as his passions, serving as a horse trainer for legendary Don Harris, an Animal Control Officer for the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter, Truck Driver, and as a highly respected Trucking Dispatcher; it has been said that while other dispatchers played checkers in this stressful job, Greg played chess and was a master of his craft. He held a special place in his heart for all of his colleagues and especially his TranSpec Trucking family.
Greg loved love, as exemplified by his devotion to his family and friends. He became a Daddy to his twin girls, Courtney and Whitney, in 1989, and stayed their fierce protector, confidant, and life advisor throughout his life. He was the proudest Daddy and loved to tell others about his girls. He became Papa for the first time in 2007, the name that he was the proudest of, and passed away knowing the love of eight grandbabies- Taelor, Jaelie, Ryder, Aedyn, Lillian, Josie, Dominic, and Jocelyn. In God’s perfect timing, Greg met his devoted wife Tammy, and they married on September 1st, 2018. She gave him his bonus daughter, Justina, who made him so proud of her accomplishments. Tammy stood by her love’s side with unwavering strength and unyielding love until his final moment.
Greg’s love of dirt racing, especially sprint cars, was unmatched. Some of his best memories were made under dirt track lights. Greg had a deep passion for show horses, winning blue ribbons throughout the US, and in the last couple of years of his life he was able to be by his granddaughter’s side and watch her in the show ring as well. He also loved his O-H-I-O Buckeyes and cheered them on even in his final days.
Greg was met in heaven by his father, Harry J. Jones; his Mammy, Shirley Seager; a special loved one, Dixie Davis; and a host of other family members. He is survived by his mother, Jill Lutz; his bonus mother, Linda Jones; sisters, Kim, and Kendra; his daughters, Courtney (Brandon) Smith, Whitney (Drew) Maxey, Justina (Eddie) Angeline; his wife, Tammy Jones; his grandchildren, Taelor, Jaelie, Ryder, Aedyn, Lillian, Josie, Dominic, and Jocelyn; and a host of nieces and nephews, dear friends, and other family members.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2025 at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville.
