With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Janice Faye Harmon on May 8, 2026, 77 years old, of Barboursville, WV. She was born on December 29, 1948.
Janice grew up and lived out her life with a strong devotion to serve children through her role as a head cook in many of the Cabell County Elementary Schools, showering every child with smiles, and impacting each one with her living example. She also loved her job and meeting all the kids who she cared for like her own. She served as Safety Officer for children after school, culinary instructor at Cabell County Vocational-Technical School and caterer for many.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Larra (Jiggs) and Faye Walker, brothers, Walter, Raymond and Johnny Walker; one sister, Deborah Harmon; and one granddaughter, Abigail Walker.
Her greatest accomplishments and survivors include her daughter, Amber (Roy) Nelson, Amber’s brothers, Hiawatha (Jane) Walker, and Travis (Stephanie) Walker, all of Huntington, WV.
Grandchildren include her grandsons, Logan Walker and “Kole Nelson” as she called him often while others coined his name as “Kole Bug”. Granddaughters include Sarah Walker and Athena Bandy. Siblings, Larry (Sandy) Walker of Teays Valley, WV, Fred Walker of Ronceverte, WV, Jennifer (Mark) Ball of Ashland, Ky. and Jeanette (Norman) Shafter of White Sulphur Springs, WV. A host of nieces, nephews, other family members, friends and community who will forever hold her memory within their hearts.
Janice “Nana” and Kole Nelson also became best friends, sidekicks you might say. Spending most days together looking for new adventures to share with others. Always laughing and kidding each other for additional hugs and love. Her favorite pastimes were spending time with her family, her plants, collecting beautiful things and shopping at yard sales and thrift shops throughout the years.
She will forever be remembered as humble, kind and compassionate to all who knew her. A person small in stature with a lion’s courage throughout any heartache, she reminded herself that even broken places can reflect God’s light and grace.
Janice never wanted to be the center of attention and lived her humble life, being grateful for everyone in it and all her blessings. We are honoring her final wish to be cremated. With every window in her house filled with plants and herbs giving life to her home, we are requesting, in lieu of flowers, please plant an herb in your window and think of Jan while cooking a wonderful meal to enjoy with your family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks. Please bear with us through our loss and grieving as she was a huge part of each of our hearts.
