Lawrence (Larry) B. Lowry passed away peacefully at age 76 on February 20th, 2025. Larry was born in Youngstown, Ohio to Kenneth and Bernice Lowry on September 21, 1948. At the age of 14, his family moved to Huntington and he attended Beverly Hills Junior High and Huntington East High School (class of 1966).
Larry graduated from Marshall University in 1970 and served 6 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He attended Duke University School of Law and earned his law degree in 1974. He then returned to Huntington to begin his 45-year career as an attorney and a partner at Barrett, Chafin, Lowry & Amos. For most of his career, Larry was dedicated to helping workers injured in the workplace receive their eligible benefits. He was highly respected in his specialty and many attorneys referred their injured clients to him for help. Later in his career he transitioned to protecting union employee benefit funds for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 132. In 2011, he received the Lafe C. Chafin Lifetime Achievement Award for Union Labor from the S.W. District Labor Council, AFL-CIO, for his service as an Outstanding Labor Attorney and his lifelong dedication to advocating for workers.
Larry’s highest priority was always his family, and he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was kind, easy-going, and unassuming. He was an avid fan of Marshall and Duke basketball, loved chocolate chip cookies, and he had a soft spot for the family’s many unusual dogs over the years. He was an active member of Christ Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.
Larry is survived by his wife Darlene Lowry; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn Lowry and Geoffrey Rutledge of Seattle, Erin and Scott Cremeans of Huntington; five grandchildren, Devin Galloway, Liza Galloway, Nolan Cremeans, Miles Lowry Rutledge, and Mila Cremeans; and his brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Kristin Lowry of Pawleys Island, SC.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Village at Riverview in Barboursville and Hospice of Huntington for their compassionate care.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church in Huntington (5730 East Pea Ridge Road) on Monday, February 24th, with visitation at 12:00 p.m. and service at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at the Spring Hill Cemetery in Huntington.
