1925 - 2025

Paul Eugene EdwardsPaul Eugene Edwards, 99, of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice. A Celebration of Life will be conducted on Saturday, July 5 at 10 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel in Barboursville. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Paul was born September 23, 1925, in Huntington, WV, a son of Cyril and Vesta Ward Edwards. A devoted Christian, he was a member of Southside, Highlawn, and First United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by Alma, his wife of 68 years, and his two brothers, Alvin and Cyril Ward. He is survived by three daughters, Paula (Dennis) Noice of Estero, Florida; Sherri (William) Jones of Flat Rock, North Carolina; and Sharon (Bo) Riley of Barboursville; grandson, Matthew (Ashley) Riley of Charlottesville, Virginia; great-grandsons, Carter and Evan Riley; and his wife, Carole Bacon, of Barboursville.

Paul proudly served for two years during WWII with the 534 Boat Battalion of the 4th Engineer Brigade in Australia, Philippines, and post-war Japan. During the Korean Conflict, Paul’s 914 Army Postal Unit was assigned to Ft Meade, Md.

Paul worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, retiring at age 55.

Known affectionately as Peep or Peepaw, Paul enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening, working puzzles, grocery shopping, over 60 years of summer vacations at Lakeside OH, his iPad, his Florida golf cart, and daily ice cream. Paul led a vibrant active life, pitching for his church’s softball team at 86, gardening until 97, fishing every evening during his 10 FL winters through age 98, and weekly grocery shopping at 99. Paul founded the Springhill Cemetery Community Garden, and he maintained a large garden there for many years. He was one of the greatest of “the greatest generation.”

Paul’s family would like to recognize and thank the dedicated service providers at the Veteran’s Administration for their care and support during the past two years. They also want to express their gratitude to Hospice of Huntington.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to HONORFLIGHT.ORG so that other veterans may experience what Paul described as one of the best days of his life.

I would like to express my sincerest condolonces to Paul's family. The one day Paul and I spent together was all it took for me to realize what a special person he was. It gives me comfort to know his day spent on the Honor Flight was one of his best. My hope for the entire family is that time works its magic quickly and erases the pain of his loss and leaves you with the wonderful memories of a truly great man.

Paul will be greatly missed.A great friend and story teller. We also miss his reeling in a fish quickly so an alligator didn't eat it off his hook. REST IN PEACE BUDDY.

My family and I are so sorry for your loss. My dad and I lived beside Paul and Alma on Fairfax Dr. in Huntington, WV throughout my childhood. I have so many wonderful memories helping them in the garden, playing shuffle board, etc. He was such an amazing soul. As a young girl, I felt so safe and seen with them as my neighbors and friends. I will always remember those moments and I am blessed for having them. Blessings and prayers to your family from mine.

We are deeply sorry to hear of Paul’s passing but have fond memories of our Florida neighbor. We enjoyed Paul’s sense of humor and some of his jokes. He will be remembered for a long time.
