Joan Hyland Smith
FRANKLIN FURNACE-Joan Hyland Smith, 94, of Franklin Furnace passed away Saturday, March 1, 2025 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. Joan was born May 20, 1930 in Franklin Furnace to the late Albert James Hyland and Anna L. Snyder Hyland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Estel E. Smith, June 21, 2017, whom she married June 29, 1953 in Wheelersburg. Joan was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Smith; a brother, Gerald Hyland and two sisters, Garnet Staker and Ruth Hyland. Joan was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church. Joan is survived by three daughters, Patty (Stephen) Tennant, Judy (Russ) James and Brenda Smith; a brother, Richard Hyland; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Tim Sutton), Brian (Alison) Tennant and Fr. Kyle Tennant and seven great grandchildren, Dane McMackin, Maddox Moose, Noah McMackin, Allie McMackin, Reed Tennant, Mila Tennant and Tyler Sutton.
Mass of Christian Burial for Joan will be 10:30 am Friday, March 7, 2025 at St. Peter in Chains Catholic Church with Fr. Kyle Tennant officiating. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Harrison-Pyles Funeral Home in Wheelersburg 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday, March 6, 2025 with Recitation of Rosary at 8:00 pm. Joan was such a nice person. I first met her when she worked the poles in Franklin Furnace, we always enjoyed talking and would run into each other at Krogers occasionally. I am so sorry for the loss. Prayers to all her family.

Joan was Mom’s best friend in high school and afterwards for a while until life separated them. Mom (Eloise Ash Porter) talked about Joan all the time and I remember visiting when I was young. I have some pics of them. Prayers for Joan’s family.
