Thomas J. Skeeter Hargis, Jr. Click for Condolences      Printable Version
1944 - 2007

Jesus Said

“I am the resurrection and the life;

He who believes in Me, even though he dies,

Yet, shall he live, and whoever lives

And believes in Me shall never die.

St. John 11:25-26

Thomas Jefferson Hargis, Jr. “Skeeter” was born February 8, 1944 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Thomas Jefferson Hargis, Sr. and the late Cecilia Kathleen (Robinson) Hargis. On February 25, 2007, while attending church, suddenly our Heavenly Father beckoned Tom home to Glory. He was preceded in his homegoing by his loving mother and his sister, Darlene Ann Hargis.

Tom graduated from William Penn High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and received his undergraduate and Master degrees from West Virginia State College and West Virginia Graduate School respectively. He was employed in numerous jobs during his years. Locally, he formerly served as the directors Tri-State OIC and SW Headstart Programs. Most recently, he served as a substitute teacher for Lincoln County Schools. Tom served in Korea with the US Army and completed 27 years with the West Virginia National Guard, retiring as a CW2 Warrant Officer. He was a member of Young Chapel A.M.E. Church where he served as a trustee, van driver, finance and culinary committee member. He formerly served as a Sunday School teacher with Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Tom was very civic-minded and previously served on numerous organizational boards in the area. He also was a former basketball coach for the YMCA, AAU teams and area sports leagues.

Tom was a loving spouse and father who offered a willing, helping hand to others. He will be greatly missed. He leaves to cherish his memory, his immediate family which includes his wife Michele, his daughter Talisha, his sons T.J (Stacey) and William (Melissa), his grandchildren Mahalie, Alexis, Tiah and Amaya Hargis, his father Thomas Jefferson Hargis, Sr., his sisters: Eleanor (Edward) Fredricks of Trenton, NJ; Karen Hargis of Harrisburg, PA; and Charlene (Dexter) Benson of Landenburg, PA. Also surviving is a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Services will be 1:00PM Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. Angela Walker, officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00AM until the time of the service at the church.

Dear Michelle & Family, We were honored to share with you in the homegoing of our dear friend and co-laborer, Skeeter. Though our hearts are saddened for this great loss, we know that his soul is present with the Lord and he will continue to watch over us and hold us together. Johnny loved Skeeter as a brother and who would have thought that these two college roommates would enjoy a 40+ year friendship. You will always be a part of our group and our family's love and we are so happy for the joy we shared with you in the recommittal services in July 2005. Even in death, Skeeter has taught us a great lesson---time is short---love your partner, love your family, love your friends and let them know how dear they are. We love you dearly and will be talking with you often. Kiss each other. I tried to call on Sunday evening to be sure you all arrived safely in Pennsylvania but think that Skeeter's phone is off. We ran in to snow but all are home safely.

Jerry Bruner(deceased)played racketball with Tom, when Jerry coached football at Marshall. I felt like I knew Tom thru Jerry. They always accused each other of cheating..they both had a great sense of humor and quick wit! It's hard not to feel cheated in life when you lose a loved one. God, grant me the SERENITY to ACCEPT the things I can not change The COURAGE to change the things I can and the WISDOM to know the difference. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear; what a privilige to carry everything to God in prayer. Michele, Lisha, T.J. and "Will", hold on to the Lord our God's unchanging hands and he will give you the peace that surpasses all understanding. This is my prayer for all that knew and loved Mr. Hargis. He was instrumental in my obtaining employment with the Housing Authority, via the Tri- State OIC program; and having the privilige of calling his wife Michele my friend and mentor while employed with the housing authority. I thank God for Mr. Hargis's helpful nature. He will be missed, but the fact that we will meet again over on the other side makes me rejoice in knowing that he too was saved by God. May you Rest in Peace Mr. Hargis.

To the Hargis Family, I am so shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of my dear friend Tom. Tom was a great person and me and my children, Nicole and Potsie Holloway were so thankful for the time he shared helping me to raise them, he was truly part of the "village". I looked forward to seeing him every year at WV States' Homecoming at the tailgate party and he will be truly and sorely missed. To his children, you all have a wonderful father and I know you all are hurting, but know know that he spoke of you all with great pride and love. Again I am sorry for your loss and to have lost such a dear friend. How befitting for God to call him Home during church services. "Earth has no sorrows that heaven can not heal. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely Yours, Mary Anne Hunter (Crawford)
