Charles Edward CorgeyCharles Edward Corgey 78 of Jasper died at his home on Monday September 24, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday September 28, 2012 at Forest Oaks Chapel with interment to follow at the West Oaks Cemetery in Jasper, TX. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He was born in Houston, TX. September 26, 1933. A graduate of South Park High School in Beaumont, TX. as Salutatorian in 1951. He earned several degrees, a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from Lamar University as a Magna cum Laude graduate. Charles was employed as President for Hydraflo Valve and Manufacturing, Inc., then later at American Darling Valve in Beaumont, TX., before beginning his own mechanical engineering practice as Corgey & Associates. He worked for five years as a project engineer for the Jefferson County Drainage District No. 7 in Port Arthur, TX. before accepting a faculty post at Lamar University. Most recently he was a consulting engineer for Unocal and Chevron Chemical until retirement in 2010. A veteran of the US Army he served his country during the Korean War. Corgey loved people and considered one of his greatest accomplishments the 1967 invention of an electronic communications panel that enabled the severely handicapped to communicate, he then furnished those devices to people across Southeast Texas and the United States while he pursued funding to provide the equipment to anyone who needed the device. Charles moved to Lumberton, TX. in 1974 and actively volunteered his time and talents towards the growth of that community. In 1977 he was in charge of the operating phase of a joint project with Lamar University and Gulf States Utilities to construct a test project home in Lumberton using Thermal Storage for heating and cooling which is known as the Gulf Coast regions first solar energy home. He was elected to the Lumberton School Board and served as President beginning in 1980. He also served as President of the Hardin County Water Control and Improvement District 1 in Pinewood. He moved to Jasper, TX. in February 2000. Active all of his life, he held Professional Engineering Licensing until June 2012, was licensed by the Texas Residential Construction Commission, and licensed by the State of Texas to design septic systems and HVAC systems until 2012. In 2002 Corgey was commissioned as a Texas Silver-Haired Legislator, an official program established by the Texas Legislature providing education and advocacy for issues relating to all Texans. A member of the Peachtree Baptist Church in Jasper, TX. Charles loved playing guitar and he and his band "CC and the Dogtrot Jammers" brought their music to local nursing homes and retirement centers. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Mary and pursued a lifelong passion of woodworking and collecting miniature trains. Charles is survived by his loving wife Mary Ann Corgey of Jasper, TX, four children Becky Aleman Howard of Fredericksburg, TX., Cindy Lu Crumpler of Orange, TX., Michele Holt of Austin, TX. and Jacques Landry of Tucson, AZ. Seven grandchildren Stevie Dean Crumpler, Chad Crumpler, Carlos Aleman, Sarah Beth Black, Carol Jo Patterson, Matthew Crumpler and Finnigan Holt. Ten great-grandchildren. Also survived by Betty Ruth Wortham Corgey of Orange, TX. the mother of his two children, brothers Donald Corgey of Beaumont, TX. and Bobby Corgey of New Caney, TX. sisters Elaine Depew of Kingwood, TX. and Mary Kinsey of Seabrook, TX. He was preceded in death by a sister Carmen and his parents Harvey and Ineta Corgey. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network located at pancan.org.
