Alan Eugene Fannin

WHEELERSBURG-Alan Eugene Fannin, 75, of Wheelersburg, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. Alan was born April 24, 1948 in Portsmouth to the late Edward Fannin and Rosemary Treat Fannin. Alan graduated in 1966 from Wheelersburg High School. He served in the Air Force from 1968 -1972 leaving the service with the rank of Staff Sargent. After serving in the Air Force, he began working at Haverhill Chemical Plant, retiring after 38 years. Alan was of Methodist faith. He served as a Volunteer Fireman for 35 years at Porter Township, serving in various leadership positions. Anyone who met Alan found a kind and generous man. He was a gifted mechanic that many family, friends and neighbors depended on to fix stuff, as it was noted he could fix anything. He enjoyed local history, collecting antiques and was passionate about gas engines and tractors. Also, he enjoyed everything about railroads and Bluegrass music from time spent with his dad and son who shared the same hobbies. In his spare time, he could be found in his building surrounded by his “stuff” or at his son’s farm. He was quiet but known for his humor delivered in a quick one-liners when least expected. He will be missed by his loving family and many friends. In addition to his parents, Alan was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, John Mullins of Ironton. Alan is survived by his wife, Betsy Mullins Fannin, whom he married September 12, 1970 in Wheelersburg, OH. Alan is also survived by a son, Chad & Shelly Fannin; a daughter, Cara & Richer Malboeuf, granddaughters, Molly & Austin Nichols and Katie & Kenny Williams; a grandson, Brady Fannin; sister and brother-in-law, Merilee (Fannin) and Randy Duncan of Wheelersburg; brothers and sister-in law, Terry and Betty Fannin of Wheelersburg, Dave and Amber Fannin of California, Maryland and Kevin Fannin of Lake Placid, Florida and a brother and sister-in-law Jill and Harold Mullins of Waverly, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests Memorial contributions be made in Alan’s name to SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth.

Alan was so sweet and awesome. I'm quite fond of Mrs F (Betsy) as I call her and I know how much she loved him. During the power outtage in the summer, they offered me their guest room to stay. Alan was such a gentleman. A kind, sweet, funny soul. I thought he was pretty amazing. High praise from one who is wary of the male species. I will be thinking of the Fannins. My condolences ho to you all.
