I am here today to do celebrant the life of Alice Cristeen (Memew) Carpenter Wright who at the age of 90 went to be with her beloved husband M A Wright and her precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on May 01, 2010. She was born on May 1, 1920 on a farm in Van Zandt County to Will and Bessy Oliver Carpenter. Cristeen or as we know her Memew married Maxie Alison Wright on October 21, 1933 in Wills Point Texas. Now the story goes they went to the local preacher who owned a salvage yard, he was under a car working when Red (Granddaddy's) nickname@ asked him to please marry them. The preacher came out from under the car, wiped off his dirty hands, he asked Cristeen if that was what she wanted and she replied yes. So he took out his book from is pocket of his coveralls and married them right there in the junk yard. Later that day, they were in Canton at courthouse were group of men seen Red and Cristeen, the group of men yelled at him What did you trade for her@ because he was known for trading nothing for something and getting a great deal, so he yelled back AA milk cow@. Memew told me that after she was married she was very afraid of granddaddy Carpenter so she ask her sister Grace to go get her things at the house (her dresses and baby dolls) and bring them back to her. Granddaddy and Memew had a long and great life to gather, met by hard times and hard work. There was a story of them meeting two very famous people. Granddaddy was finishing up work at a gas station when a car drove in and a couple ask for directions. He told them that he was getting off work and he would show them the way if they gave him a left. They gave him a ride to the house which was up on top of the hill, he proceeded to give him directions and at the bottom of the hill was lots of water crossing the road. The couple asked Memew and Aunt Grace to check the water crossing to see if the car would make and they would give them each a quarter. Memew and Aunt Grace walked to the road and checked and as the couple drove through the water they gave them both a quarter. Well Memew also finished the story with do you know who the couple was...Bonnie and Clyde, the most famous bank robbers. We all love to hear Memew stories about the life she lead and how we all came about. Her life was remarkable, married at 13, first child by 14 and 5 more to follow, 4 boys and 2 girls. She was a hard worker and devoted to taking care of her family. Memew for years worked as a upholster and craftsmen by ever sense of the word. She could sew almost anything with no pattern or drawings and she would never say no. I think almost everyone in our family has something Memew has done for them. New babies would have afghan, younger children would have nogahid ( scary looking monsters), clothing and covering everyone=s car seats or furniture. We loved Memew=s handmade treasures and the time we spent working with her to see the completed work. I have to tell you one thing my kids and I love that Memew made was those great buttered stewed potatoes, we are going to greatly miss those. We have all passed through Memew=s door and she cared for us like a mother. She was a role model to our lives with Granddaddy and her being married for over 60 years, raising 6 children in times that were not easy and also providing for them and to all the grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren to teach us respect and honor. In my life I also know I could ask Memew for anything and she would do her best to provided what was needed for me not always what was best. The most important mark she has made on me is her love for God=s word. She was a great Christian and showed us the way to see her again through knowing that if we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ that someday we will see her and the rest over our beloved family. Please do not leave here today not believing that you will see her again and the only way this will happen is to be saved. In closing today we lay to rest Cristeen Alice Wright, our Memew, the patriarch of our family, our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great grandmother, may we look around here today and understand we are a family that will carry on because we have her with us each day. I love each of you here today and please understand we will always be family.
