1962 - 2009
Age: 47
HINCKLEY, Carolyn Ann (Seyfarth)
of Lawton, MI
Died at home on Friday, September 18,2009. Carolyn was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 6, 1962, to Frederic Walter and Mary Ann (Hartness) Seyfarth. Carolyn was a 1980 graduate of Dondero High School, in Royal Oak, Michigan. She attended Eastern Michigan University, from which she received a Bachelor's degree in computer science, a Master's degree in business administration and a second Master's degree in education. Carolyn worked for EDS (General Motors) and Miesel-Sysco, in the field of computer services. She then worked for several years for First of America Bank, as a financial analyst. Finally, Carolyn returned to college to earn a Master of Education degree and subsequently obtained her teaching certification. She was then employed for nearly ten years at the VanBuren Intermediate School District, first, teaching mathematics and then teaching computer programming. In addition to her classroom work, she mentored students participating in Business Professionals of America and FIRST Robotics competitions. Because she loved her work and life in general, Carolyn was very active and upbeat, despite very serious health problems. Her joy of life was inspiring to those who knew her. Beyond her career, Carolyn was a Girl Scout leader and a trainer of Girl Scout leaders, for many years. She also was deeply involved in fiber arts, all the way from raising sheep, processing and spinning the wool, to knitting beautiful articles of clothing, which she sold commercially. For many years, Carolyn studied in the Sanchin-Ryu school of karate, where she earned a black belt and was known as Sansei Carolyn. Carolyn is survived by her husband, Dr. John M. Hinckley of Lawton; two daughters, Sarah and Catherine Hinckley of Lawton; her mother Mary Ann Seyfarth, of Troy, Michigan; her father Frederic (Sue) Seyfarth, of Tryon, North Carolina; her brother John (Stephanie) Seyfarth, of Northville, Michigan; her half brother Frederic (Lora) Seyfarth, of Sterling Heights, Michigan and her half sister Heather (Joe) Wells, of Whitmore Lake, Michigan. Carolyn was also loved by nieces Olivia and Rachel Seyfarth, Paige and Jacqueline Seyfarth, and Michelle Wells, nephews Joshua Seyfarth and Joe Wells. In addition she will be greatly missed by Mace and Carol (Hartness) Bell, Sally (Seyfarth) Reigle and several cousins. Following Carolyn's wishes, cremation will take place, with a small remembrance, yet to be arranged. Arrangements are by the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw.

Mrs. Hinckley inspired me to become who I am today. If not for Mrs. Hinckley, I would not have pursued programming and college. She was a fantastic teacher, and will be missed.

Dearest cousin Carolyn;
Being the sailor that I am, these words express my thoughts of you at this time . . .
______________________
I am standing on the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her
until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come down to mingle
with each other.
Then someone at my side says: 'There! She's gone.'
Gone where? Gone from my sight that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she
was when she left my side,
and just as able to bear her load of living
freight to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her;
and just at the moment when someone at my side says:
'There! She's gone,'
there are others watching her coming,
and voices ready to take up the glad shout
'There she comes!'
And that is dying.
- Charles Henry Brent
1862 - 1926
______________________
You are a ship who has slipped beyond the horizon
just out of sight, but not out of mind or heart.
For your sails have now become wings and now you can soar.
We shall see each other again -- God speed.
Love,
Matt

Mrs. Hinckley was a great person. Because of her class at the tech center in Lawrence I am now headed towards a career in Web Design. I have so many great memories that I would not have if I never joined her class such as the robotics competition and the BPA competitions. Mrs. Hinckley will always be remembered by me as the one who inspired me to lead a more successful life.

My big sister, Carolyn, I will forever miss you. You may have been a great teacher, friend, leader, or whatever you put your mind to, but the thing you were greatest at was being a sister, wife, mother and daughter. We are all blessed for having you in our lives. You have always been an inspiration to me, no matter how I seemed to mess things up; it was you that always gave me encouragement. It was you that always told me that I could do anything I put my mind to, and who better to learn that from then you. Even in your battle with cancer, you shined. The things you accomplished in your short time on this earth are remarkable. You always were thinking of others, and did it with style. I wished that we would have had more time to spend with each other over the years, but I am blessed with all the memories that I have with you in them. It is an honor to me to have someone as wonderful as you to call my sister. You truly are the greatest and strongest person I have ever known. You have touched the lives of so many people other than our family; you will live on, and will not be forgotten. I love you and will miss you until we are together again.

Death is always so very painful.
I look forward to the time when Revelation 21:4 (no more death) will be fulfilled.
May you find comfort and strength to endure in the coming days.
Take Care

It is with a sad heart that I say goodbye, Carolyn. MACUL will not be quite the same without you. I always loved your stories about the robotics championships. I pray that your family finds peace during this time.

I worked with Carolyn at First of America, and what a true pleasure it was to know her. She was so proud of her family.
May it be some comfort to you now to know how many lives she brightened with her kindness... and how many hearts remember her with love.

Carolyn was a true friend and mentor. I loved her like a sister. She was an intelligent person who I admired and enjoyed working with. Carolyn was also a very dedicated teacher, who worked tirelessly for her students. I was always amazed at the amount of energy she had for all of her interests.
I enjoyed our lunches, traveling to conferences, and sharing stories about our families. I will truly miss her, and I will always be thankful for our friendship.

I first met Carolyn in the Fall 2006 semester when my son was enrolled in her computer programming course at VBISD. Not only was she an awesome teacher who taught my son some very valuable lessons and inspired him to continue studies in computer science in college, Carolyn was an unforgettable source of guidance and inspiration for me in my own battle with breast cancer, which began that same semester. We will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to Carolyn's entire family, especially her husband and two daughters.

Carolyn gave such strength and dedication to everything in which she was involved that it made one wonder how she had time for anything else in her life. She was a phenomenal teacher, mentor, and friend; and though we were not related, I felt that we had such a close connection, it was as if we were sisters. She had a way of knowing and doing what needed to be done even before anyone asked her to do it. She was a driving force for school improvement and changes that were in the best interest of student learning. Carolyn was a leader while at the same time being a great team player. No one could top Carolyn's energy, positive attitude, and love of learning. My heart goes out to all those who loved her. We are forever blessed and linked by her beautiful nature while on this earth.

Carolyn Hinckley was not only an EMU Computer Science alumnus but also has been a mover and shaker on the SIGCS of MACUL for about 5 years. She kept us on track and had great ideas. She was also a very kind person, helping out whatever way she could. She never made much of her disease, just working around the chemo and radiation treatments to get done what she wanted done. She will be greatly missed.
