Okie Carter

1939 - 2015

Okie Carter, 76, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife by his side on December 9, 2015.

Okie was born in Pike County, KY, on October 4, 1939 a son of the late Thurman and Gracie Spencer Carter.

When he was 8 years old his family moved to Greenup County, KY. At 18 years old he moved to Michigan and lived with his sister Eunice Queen and her family, where he worked picking apples. When he was 21 years old he moved to Waukegan, Illinois with his sister Bessie McBrayer and her family, where he worked at a service station at the naval base. Here he met his future wife Lillian Waino, in 1973 they married and moved to Akron, OH. He was employed by Tarpco, Inc. from 1973 until he retired in 2001.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 brothers Raymond and Lee Carter, 2 sisters Edna Thacker and Eunice Thomas and 1 step daughter Brenda Tribble.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years Lillian Sorensen Waino Carter, 1 daughter Michelle Carter of Akron, OH, 1 step daughter, Gail (Jerald) Meliet of Baton Rouge, LA,2 step sons, Richard Waino of Akron, OH and Ronald (Sandra) Waino of Stow, OH, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 1 Brother Thurman (Alta) Carter, Jr of Woodsfield, OH, 4 sisters Bessie McBrayer and Janet (Stanton) Miller of Greenup, KY, Opal Gottschalk of Mansfield, OH, Violet (Jimmy) Patton of Fort Myers, FL.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Reed Funeral Home in Greenup by Pastor Johnsey Collins. Burial will be in the Smith Branch Cemetery, Greenup.

Visitation will be 1:00 pm until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
