Marilyn Dee Lake, 87, of Bellefonte, died April 12, 2016.
She was born on Dec. 10, 1928, in Lima, Ohio, the daughter of the late Mildred Hawisher and Clark Bennett. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years and the love of her life, Edward Wilson Lake; her son, Charles Bennett Lake; and a sister, Carol W. Brewer.
Dee was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland and was involved in numerous roles in the church throughout her life. She graduated from Indiana University with a degree in speech therapy and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. After working in Iowa and Indiana as a speech and hearing therapist, Dee and Ed moved to Ashland in the early 1950s, where she worked as a speech therapist for the Boyd and Greenup county schools and the Summit prison.
Dee also volunteered or had office in numerous civic organizations, including the Highlands Museum, the Ashland Historic Preservation Committee, the Paramount Arts Center, the Bellefonte Country Club and the Bennett Lake Memorial Tennis Tournament. Dee and Ed had a passion for traveling the world and enjoyed a life of good friends. She was an avid tennis player, bridge club participant and social enthusiast. Always on the go, Dee will be remembered for her competitive spirit and joy for social interaction and activities.
Dee is survived by a son, Peter Stevenson Lake, and his wife, Hillery, and their children, Tyler and Charlie of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Laurie Wilson Lake, and her son, Eric, of Floresville, Texas; and a daughter-in-law, Sharon Lake, and her children, Drew, Alli and Emily, of Lexington.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joel Kelly officiating.
Steen Funeral Home in Ashland are in charge of arrangements.
