James Raymond Smith, 68, of Ashland, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving wife, Sue and family. He was born Jan. 10, 1948, in Ashland, a son of the late James Avery Smith and Loretta Wright Smith. Jim was a 1966 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School. He was a member of Wildwood Baptist Church, Elks Lodge BPOE 350, a U.S. Army veteran and retired as a crane operator from AK Steel after 39 years of service. He was a proud supporter of the University of Kentucky athletics and Cincinnati Reds. He was known by many names by his beloved family and friends including Jim, Jimmy, Jimmy Ray, J.R. or Hokey but his favorite nicknames were dad and grandad. While the loss of Jim is difficult, we are all better people for having him in our lives. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years, Susan Whitt Smith of Ashland; a son, James Tyler Smith of Ashland; daughters Julie Smith Thacker (Joe) of Ashland and Allison Smith Jenkins (Ben) of Louisville; brothers Michael Smith (Dixie), Randy Smith (Patty) and Eddie Smith; a sister, Lora Stewart (Philip); his beloved grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth, Jacob Harrison & Jillian Nicole Thacker, Brady Whitt, Fenley Elizabeth and Graham James Jenkins; as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and dear friends. A celebration of Jim's life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at Steen Funeral Home-13th Street Chapel beginning with an Elks Service followed by words of comfort from Pastor Tom Leach. Friends may call after 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101; Wildwood Baptist Church Youth Group, 3414 Charles St., Ashland, KY 41102 or to Build Ashland, c/o Town Square Bank.
