Gene Joseph Gambill, 89, of Ashland, passed away Monday, September 4, 2017, at Community Hospice Care Center.

He was born November 21, 1927, in Ashland, KY, a son of the late John and Mima Green Gambill. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Dorla Dean Gibbs Gambill in 2000; son, Ronald Joseph Gambill; sister, Maxine Burns; and a son in law Jeffrey B. Remy.

Gene was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and U.K. Basketball. He retired after 36 years of service from Armco Steel and served honorably in the United States Army. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include sons, Roderick (Kathy) Gambill of Ashland, Timothy (Karen) Gambill of Flatwoods; daughters, Linda Remy of Ironton, OH, and Beckie (David) Tuinstra of South Point, OH; brothers, John Talmage (Faye) Gambill of Westwood and Michael (Judith) Gambill of Westwood; sister, Helen (Charlie Joe) Thomason of Columbus, OH; 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2017, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel with Pastor Ken Gowin officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and American Legion Kenova Post 93.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Avenue, Ashland, KY 41101.
