Phillip A. Nitzberg at the age of 89 passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at a Kerrville hospital. He was born on July 9, 1925 in Chicago, IL to William and Ida Nitzberg. Phillip served on convoy duty with the USCG in the North Atlantic during WW2. Afterwards, served as a radio operator aboard various ships & shore stations in the CONUS, Alaska, Aleutians, Puerto Rico & U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1958, he enlisted in the USAF & served as a Communications Center Supervisor in the CONUS, Germany & Okinawa. Phillip retired from the Air Force in 1964, worked as a Communications Supervisor at the Missile Intercept Test Facility on Kwajalein Island. He returned to the States, and went on to work for Western Union, first as a Wire Chief and then as a outside technician until his retirement in 1986.
Phil & Mary moved to Kerrville in 1989 where Phil became active in the community. He served as Treasurer of the Jewish community and President of the Tent "Tow", Hill Country Scots and was an eight year Volunteer at the Military Retirees Office. He enjoyed hiking, camping and the Salon discussion group. Phil had an intense love of country and abhorred divisive politics. Often writing "Letters to the Editor" commending partisan politics and encouraging American patriotism. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister.
Phil is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Mary Nitzberg of Kerrville; daughter Donnarae Van Sickler; granddaughter Heather Overby and husband Don; great grandson Alexander Overby. Services will be private but monetary memorials may be given to the Rafael Free Clinic or the St. Vincent Food Bank.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 pm, on Friday, July 18, 2014 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio Texas with full military honors.
